It is with sadness that we remember the passing of Ronald "Wyn" Davies, a true Newcastle United legend, who recently passed away at the age of 83. Affectionately known as "Wyn the Leap" for his incredible heading ability and simply "The Mighty Wyn" by the Toon Army, Davies left an indelible mark on St. James' Park.
Davies arrived at Newcastle United in 1966 for a club-record fee of £80,000, a testament to his burgeoning reputation as a formidable centre-forward. He quickly became a fan favourite, known for his towering presence and aerial prowess that terrorised opposition defences. During his five years with the Magpies, from 1966 to 1971, he made 216 appearances and netted 53 goals.
His most significant achievement with Newcastle United undoubtedly came in 1969, when he was a pivotal part of the team that lifted the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, the club's only major European trophy. His contributions were crucial to that historic triumph, solidifying his place in Newcastle's folklore.
Beyond his club career, Davies also proudly represented Wales, earning 34 caps and scoring six goals for his country between 1963 and 1973.
After his impactful spell at Newcastle, Davies went on to play for other notable clubs, including Manchester City, Manchester United, and Blackpool, before concluding his professional career. Following his retirement from football at 37, he worked as a baker in Bolton.
