The transfer window will be open once again in just over a month, with Ross Wilson set to lead Newcastle United’s transfer charge for the first time as sporting director.
It has been reported that Newcastle are looking at midfield and full-back reinforcements, as they aim to add to their squad even further after making six signings in the summer.
In terms of midfield, Kees Smit is Newcastle United’s top target. The Dutch wonderkid is firmly on the Magpies’ radar, with Smit seen as attainable by Newcastle.

That is the belief on Tyneside, and the Magpies reportedly have a plan to land the 19-year-old ahead of major European clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid.
According to the Athletic, Newcastle United are going to try and sign Smit in January, believing that is their best chance to get him ahead of his other suitors.
The Athletic add that the Magpies’ summer approach for Smit was turned down by AZ Alkmaar, with an ‘aggressive’ January approach required to strike a deal for one of Europe’s most in demand teenagers.
Despite Newcastle’s plan, the report states they are aware that Smit will likely wait until the summer to decide his next move, while AZ Alkmaar are not planning to sell their crown jewel at the beginning of 2026.

When the Magpies’ interest first emerged, it was reported that AZ want the centre-midfielder to become their most lucrative outgoing transfer ever. The current record belongs to Tijjani Reijnders, who AZ sold for around £22million.
It turns out the Dutch club want to massively surpass that record, with the Athletic reporting that they value Smit at £53million.
That would make him one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever, behind Nick Woltemade, Sandro Tonali, Yoane Wissa and Anthony Elanga.
