After spending so long at St. James’ Park, it’s understandable that the club may be reluctant to move on, but plans for a new ground appear to have been pushed back even further now.
Newcastle United have called St. James’ Park home for almost 133 years, and the stadium has provided so many special memories for fans.
Naturally, though, with a ground so old, the club feel they are being left behind by their rivals who have newer, shinier stadiums.
What is your most favourite and least favourite thing about St James’ Park?
The incredible revenue stream of clubs like Tottenham Hotspur since building their new stadium, for example, has Newcastle’s owners looking on with envious eyes and plotting their own move.
There are plans to build a new £1.2bn stadium for Newcastle, but when that actually happens remains to be seen.
St. James’ Park to host Women’s World Cup in 2035?
Earlier this month it was revealed that St. James’ Park would be used for Euro 2028, which means PIF won’t touch the ground until at least after that tournament.
It’s thought that it could be 2030 before development begins, which will cost Newcastle years’ worth of higher revenue. But, it’s a price potentially worth paying for the prestige of hosting a major international tournament.
However, the latest announcement from the FA regarding the 2035 Women’s World Cup states St. James’ Park is part of the proposal for the UK’s bid to host the event.
Does that mean St. James’ Park will stand for another ten years? Perhaps so. Or, will Newcastle be allowed to switch out the original venue for their new stadium if it’s built in the interim?
That seems a logical caveat, but then again, Manchester United’s Old Trafford is not included in the list of stadiums as part of the proposal. The Red Devils are looking to build a new ground in the near future, and you’d think that, if they were able to list Old Trafford for now and then change the proposal, Man United would have done that.
Sounds like we will be seeing Newcastle play at St. James’ Park until at least the 2035/36 campaign, then, which is crazy to think.
What we know about Newcastle United’s new stadium
We know PIF intend to develop their new stadium for Newcastle at Leazes Park, with plans expected to be shared in 2026.
In the wake of the Euro 2028 announcement, Newcastle sources insisted spades will not hit the ground until at least after the 2028/29 season and possibly even later than that.
Alan Shearer can’t quite put his finger on Newcastle United’s away form 🤔
Still, there is one positive to these plans being so long drawn-out… at least we know PIF are in it for the long haul at Newcastle.
With new PSR regulations coming into play next season, Newcastle’s owners are likely weighing up their investments against the long-term revenue stream they can build at the club. Having a new stadium will help with the latter, but it will also impact the former significantly.
Perhaps waiting, and being part of two major international tournaments, is the best option for a club looking to enhance its global reputation.
