Newcastle United are hopeful they can make Kees Smit an offer he simply cannot refuse.

Indeed, Geordie Boot Boys understands that Newcastle United are interested in signing Smit, who has starred for AZ Alkmaar this season.

The 19-year-old is capable of playing across the midfield and is reportedly also of interest from the likes of Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Beating that kind of competition to a signing is not easy, particularly after a transfer window in which Newcastle missed out on several key targets.

Still, hope is not lost. The club remain ambitious in the transfer market and it seems there is optimism they could make a statement by signing Smit.

Newcastle United hope the chance to develop appeals to Kees Smit

According to Craig Hope in The Daily Mail, there is a hope from within at Newcastle that they could feasibly beat some big-name competition to sign Smit.

Hope suggests he’s got a feeling that those behind the scenes are optimistic they can offer the teenager a tempting package.

Not only do they hope they can financially appeal to the in-demand midfielder, the club hope they can prove to him that he will be able to develop under Eddie Howe.

Which position should Newcastle United look to strengthen in January?

The Newcastle United manager has consistently proven he is capable of developing players.

All of Bruno Guimaraes, Sven Botman, Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall joined the club at a crucial stage of their development and have become much better players under his watch.

If players like Smit reject other major clubs because of that, it’ll be down to Howe’s coaching ability more than anything else.

PIF have chance to prove they remain ambitious at Newcastle United in January

Newcastle are likely to have money to spend in the January transfer window, having sold Alexander Isak for a huge fee in September.

While that doesn’t mean PSR issues are a thing of the past, it does allow PIF the chance to make a first January signing in three years.

Newcastle United’s spending power ahead of the January transfer window.

Premier League PSR isn’t an immediate concern for Newcastle in January. With UEFA’s equivalent rules, they should be absolutely fine too. If they thought there was good value in the market and wanted to spend £100m-plus, they could do.

Football finance expert Adam Williams, speaking to Geordie Boot Boys.

Howe insists that PIF remain ambitious at Newcastle and moving for Smit would be a fine way of proving that.

Signing a talented young midfielder to come in and complement the likes of Tonali and Guimaraes would be an excellent statement of intent.

Smit’s style of play has seen him compared to the likes of Pedri and Kevin De Bruyne. A player on the up who could be sold on for huge money, he looks exactly the kind of player the club should be signing.
