In the immediate term, Newcastle United continue to fail to fully convince but Lewis Miley offers hope of future success.
Once again, Newcastle United left Premier League points on the table after they were pegged back to a 2-2 draw with Chelsea at St James’ Park.
This side are difficult to judge. While Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea did see them play well at times, few would have been shocked to see the final result.
Who was Newcastle United’s MOTM against Chelsea?!
Strange to say there are a few choices given the result!
No one in the Premier League has dropped as many points from winning positions this season (13).
Eddie Howe’s side are a hugely frustrating one but at least Miley, filling in at right-back amid the absence of Tino Livramento – continues to impress.
Newcastle United fans impressed by Lewis Miley vs Chelsea
The Newcastle academy graduate played there against Fulham earlier this week and did so against the Blues too.
Miley was excellent up against Argentina international Alejandro Garnacho and rarely allowed him the chance to get past him.
With Livramento expected to miss until at least the start of 2026, Newcastle fans appear to think they are in safe hands with the 19-year-old playing out of position.
“Miley was so good,” said one fan.
Another commented: “What a footballer he is.”
“What an absolutely sensational performance that was,” claimed another supporter.
One fan added: “Lewis Miley is a baller by the way. The work he’s done in the summer has made a massive difference to his game. It’s brilliant to watch.”
“Miley [has] done more going forward from RB than Tino has all season,” was another compliment.
“Miley just wasn’t outstanding today – he has been excellent all season. It’s time we acknowledge he’s a first team starter,” claimed one fan.
AGREE OR DISAGREE: Eddie Howe hasn’t had it easy this season, but he should be doing much better
How Lewis Miley could save Newcastle United millions in the transfer market
At some point, Newcastle may have to replace Livramento, amid doubts about his long-term future.
There is no suggestion that the England star definitely will leave, but Livramento is set to delay contract talks at Newcastle.
Either way, Kieran Trippier is surely approaching the end of his career, so Newcastle may soon be short of one right-back at some point.
In Miley, however, they have an internal option.
To suggest his future lies in that position may be unwise but the fact he can cover it so well should make Newcastle’s task of replacing Trippier and potentially Livramento both cheaper and easier.
