The idea of Newcastle United bringing Elliot Anderson back to the club looks increasingly unlikely.
Anderson is a dream target for Newcastle United, having established himself as an England international since leaving for Nottingham Forest in 2024.
Still, Manchester United also want to sign Anderson and Forest, for their part, are in a good position to demand an awful lot of money for the 23-year-old.
Comment below! The one player who Newcastle United should sign in January is…
In an ideal world, Anderson would come back to Newcastle and spend his prime years at his boyhood club.
That, however, is looking increasingly unlikely.

Newcastle United sources suggest they won’t sign Elliot Anderson
Newcastle are interested in Anderson but, frankly, which team wouldn’t be?
He’s emerged as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and looks set to play a key role for England at next summer’s World Cup.
With all due respect to Forest, he’s also playing for a big club who would realistically sell their best players.
Newcastle United’s spending power ahead of the January transfer window. Do you expect PIF to actually make a signing?
Tempting him away from the City Ground would surely be easier than getting him out of a ‘traditional’ top six club, after all.
However, despite Newcastle being interested, journalist Ben Jacobs has suggested that sources behind the scenes at St James’ Park are steering people away from the idea that Newcastle could sign him next summer.
Speaking to The United Stand Podcast, noted transfer expert Ben Jacobs said: “I think Tottenham will be ones to watch, Newcastle could be another, but sources around St James’ Park at the moment are sort of steering away from re-signing Elliot Anderson, but you can never say never, so they might be there.”
Why Newcastle United won’t be re-signing Elliot Anderson
Sadly for supporters, Eddie Howe has already confirmed that Anderson will likely be too expensive for Newcastle.
Forest are in a position to demand over £100million for his services and Newcastle have simply never paid that amount of money for one player.
Though the club’s PSR position has improved by selling Alexander Isak, it’s still something that needs to be taken into account.
Though Anderson would no doubt improve the Newcastle squad, central midfield is perhaps not the most pressing area to strengthen.
It is gutting to imagine Anderson developing into an even better player at another club but that is something Newcastle fans may have to get used to.
