Newcastle United fans on social media believe Eddie Howe should take note from Dan Burn’s performance for England against Albania.
Burn was criticised for his performance for England against Albania due to some of his passing but the Newcastle United star was far from alone in giving the ball away.
England rarely looked like losing and it is worth remembering that the Three Lions are yet to concede a goal with Burn in the team.
Granted, his five caps have come against Albania, Andorra and Latvia but it’s still an impressive record.
Toon fans online believe Burn’s outing should further underline the fact he’s a central defender and not a left-back.
Newcastle United fans loved seeing Dan Burn play as a centre-back again after left-back struggles
Burn has been playing as a left-back for Newcastle recently and while that has been enforced for the most part, last weekend’s defeat to Brentford caused some frustration.
Lewis Hall was on the bench and didn’t even come on when Burn was booked. Predictably, Burn was then sent off after giving away a penalty.
Howe could not have done much when Hall was injured, and no one would have expected Alex Murphy to start, but not to have seen the young Irishman at all did seem strange.
Reflecting on Burn’s performance for England, Newcastle fans believe Howe should have seen how solid he was at centre-back and hope he will restore him there going forward.
One wrote: “He’s a great CB. But either play him at CB or don’t play him. He can’t be a fill in at LB anymore.”
Another added: “I’ll never discredit his CB performances because they’re always good but it’s so clear the man is not a left back.”
“Unsurprisingly plays well when playing in his actual position,” wrote another fan.
Burn is suspended for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Manchester City.
Lewis Hall has responded to the Dan Burn debate in the best possible fashion
Burn playing well at centre back isn’t anything new and, sadly, he won’t be available on Saturday.
That should mean Hall, fitness dependent, starts at left back against Pep Guardiola’s side.
Hall impressed for the England U21s against the Republic of Ireland and came through that game unscathed.
For Howe, that’s a big boost. Hall has been building up his fitness and while Howe’s caution with him is understandable, it’s time to bring him back into the fold.
It would be better to have Burn available for Saturday of course but Hall’s return to form has come just at the right time.
