Newcastle United star Malick Thiaw saw his dream season continue on Thursday after Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann called him into his squad.

Thiaw continues to impress for Newcastle United and is looking like one of the best signings any Premier League club made this summer.

The former AC Milan star has made a brilliant start to life at Newcastle United, alongside compatriot Nick Woltemade.

Woltemade is up and running as a Germany player after scoring his first goal for his country earlier this month and Thiaw is making a late run for a place in their squad for next summer’s World Cup if they get there.

Julian Nagelsmann says Malick Thiaw has immediately become a key Newcastle United player

Thiaw has three caps for his country but hasn’t added to his tally since playing in a 2-2 draw with Mexico in October 2023.

Still, he will now get that chance. This has been a difficult period for the German national team but, such is the weight of their history, they will still be expected to go reasonably deep next summer if they get there.

Clearly, a nation like Germany are always going to boast impressive strength in depth. Thiaw, however, is now out of the proverbial international wilderness at a hugely important time.

Reflecting on the decision to call Thiaw back into the squad, Nagelsmann said (via BILD): “Malick Thiaw is a regular starter in the Premier League and, after his move to England, immediately became one of the pillars of the team.”

Why Malick Thiaw’s redemption reflects so well on Newcastle United

Newcastle were convinced Thiaw would be an excellent signing, even after they first moved for the likes of Marc Guehi.

Those behind the scenes rated the player for a long time and the fact he’s hit the ground running so quickly is a testament to the club’s recruitment policy.

Obviously, he was playing at a high level in Milan so hardly represents a completely unearthed gem.

Still, the fact that it was Newcastle who took a relative risk by bringing him to the Premier League further underlines just how well the club conduct their recruitment.

Thiaw’s move to Newcastle has worked out for all parties. If he establishes himself as a German international, the deal to sign him relatively cheaply will look even more inspired.
