Nick Woltemade could be forgiven for dreading Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup clash with Fulham.
The Newcastle United squad were in action again just days after losing the Tyne-Wear derby, which was comfortably the worst day of Nick Woltemade’s Toon career.
It was his own goal that gave Sunderland victory over Newcastle United, while his overall performance in the derby was far from impressive.
Despite being such a cool character, the 23-year-old must have been nervous upon his arrival at St James’ Park. However, he had nothing to worry about.
Winning again would be TWICE as nice!
That first Carabao Cup win was special, but retaining the trophy would be even better. Which would mean more to you? 🤩
Nick Woltemade receives great support from Newcastle United fans
With Yoane Wissa making his first Newcastle United start, Woltemade found himself on the bench against Fulham.
That meant warming up on the touchline incredibly close to the Newcastle United fans who were left devastated by Sunday’s derby defeat.
As he ran along the touchline for the first time during the game against Fulham, he received an incredible ovation. The Toon Army gave Woltemade a generously warm applause, while some supporters even rose to their feet to encourage the giant German.
Woltemade was then brought on in the second half to replace Wissa, and once again was given a great reception.
After coming on in the 72nd minute alongside Sandro Tonali, it was Woltemade’s name that was sung loud and proud throughout St James’ Park.
That moment will have meant a lot to Newcastle’s most expensive signing.

Newcastle United crossing stopped as soon as Nick Woltemade came on
But while Woltemade will have appreciated the love from the Newcastle United fans, he will surely have been questioning his teammates’ actions.
During the 72 minutes that Wissa was on the pitch, the Magpies’ wingers put countless crosses into the box. One from Jacob Murphy resulted in Wissa’s first Newcastle goal, while a lot of them were headed away.
There was a clear intent from Newcastle to get the ball into the box, but that intent seemed to disappear as soon as 6ft 6in Woltemade came on.
Given his height and proven aerial prowess, Howe simply must instruct his players to get more balls into the box for Woltemade to attack.
