Anthony Gordon’s transfer from Newcastle United to Barcelona is moving a step closer, according to reports in the Spanish media.

Indeed, Gordon has been set to leave Newcastle United for a while now, though he was widely expected to link up with Harry Kane at Bayern Munich.

However, Barcelona have now agreed a deal for Gordon, who is set to leave Newcastle for around £69.3million. A sell-on clause has also reportedly been included.

The move is getting closer, with a medical to happen imminently.

Gordon set to undergo Barcelona medical on Thursday

According to leading Spanish publication Sport, Gordon is set to land in Barcelona at 2.20pm CET on Thursday.

From there, it’s claimed the England international will have a quick lunch before undertaking his medical tests ahead of joining the Catalan giants.

They also claim that the Gordon deal is one of the fastest Barca will have completed in modern history.

Hopefully, this is the start of a decisive summer. Selling Gordon makes sense for Newcastle, who waited far too long to cash in on Alexander Isak last summer.

Now, they can focus on signing replacements, safe in the knowledge that another transfer saga is not hanging over them for months.

Gordon leaves Newcastle with a relatively strange legacy. Electric at times and anonymous at others, things have rarely felt the same for him since that excellent first full season on Tyneside back in 2023/24.

It is about time Newcastle embraced selling players. Player trading is a key part of the modern game and they spent all of last summer trying to ignore that fact.

Lessons do appear to have been learned following last summer’s Isak debacle.

Indeed, last summer went so badly that the fact that Newcastle are selling one of their leading players so quickly this year can actually be framed as a positive.
