Nick Woltemade thanked Newcastle United for the brilliant atmosphere they created as he finally ended his goal drought in the Premier League.
Clearly, part of the reason that Woltemade hadn’t scored in the Premier League since December was because he’s been playing deep in midfield.
Still, it was brilliant to see the German score as Newcastle United beat West Ham 3-1 in their final home game of the season.
Sunday’s win saw the former make his 50th appearance for the club, and he had a message for supporters after it.
Woltemade thanks Newcastle fans for their support
Not long after the final whistle, Woltemade posted a statement on Instagram.
He captioned a post, which included photos of him celebrating his goal: “Thanks for the amazing atmosphere today, Geordies. 50 Games in Black & White.”
There is a chance, although perhaps something of a remote one, that the forward has played his final home game for the club he joined at record-breaking expense only last summer.
Indeed, Woltemade is facing an uncertain future at Newcastle. Reports in Germany suggest he has been unhappy with his lack of game time and could consider a move after the World Cup.
There’s obviously no guarantee he will leave the club this summer, just that it is a subject that has been discussed more than one would have expected when Woltemade first arrived and initially scored goals.
It is worth mentioning, however, that the forward has started the last two games as Eddie Howe tweaked the system with one eye on the future of the club.
That might be significant. It might suggest Woltemade really is a part of his plans going forward.
While not to pretend that his first – and potentially only – season on Tyneside has been a resounding success, he has still reached double figures in a largely dreadful attacking team all while playing in midfield for a few months.
It will be fascinating to see what unfolds over the next few months…
