Newcastle United are likely to be without one of their most experienced players for their trip to Sunderland next month.

The first derby of the season will see Newcastle United head to Sunderland on Sunday, 14 December, 2025 at 2pm GMT.

While Newcastle would generally be favourites to beat a newly-promoted team, their dismal away form makes the trip all the more daunting.

So does Newcastle’s relentless fixture schedule. The games are coming thick and fast and Eddie Howe needs all of his players available to combat it.

Still, Kieran Trippier may not be fit enough to make the short trip to the Stadium of Light.

Trippier said he “can’t wait to beat” Sunderland this season, having got an earful from their supporters when playing in an FA Cup tie there in January 2024.

Sadly, he may now be denied that chance.

Kieran Trippier could miss Sunderland vs Newcastle United

According to The Daily Mail, the hamstring injury that Trippier suffered in training is slightly more serious than initially feared.

It has so far ruled him out of games against Manchester City and Marseille and could keep him out of action for a further four weeks.

The worst-case scenario is that he misses the trip to Wearside.

Lewis Miley might have to get used to new position for Newcastle United

Trippier isn’t the only right-back injured for Newcastle right now, with Emil Krafth missing the loss away at Marseille earlier this week.

That leaves only Tino Livramento available and he’s only just returning from an injury himself.

As such, Lewis Miley might have to get used to life in a new position.

Miley played at right-back for Newcastle against Marseille, much to the surprise of plenty of fans online.

To Miley’s credit, he performed reasonably well in an unfamiliar role and a lack of options elsewhere likely means he will need to be on standby as the fixtures start to pile up.
