Newcastle United have work to do in the January transfer window, and the win against Man City is not going to disguise that fact.
Obviously, the triumph over City on Saturday is a massive boost for Newcastle and Eddie Howe. They now have three more points on the board, have put an end to a bad run of form, and gained some real momentum ahead of a tricky run of fixtures.
Which position should Newcastle United look to strengthen in January?
But, with some players not performing as hoped and injuries affecting the squad, Howe needs reinforcements. Most notably, there’s a lot of talk about the Magpies bringing in a new midfielder, with a number of names linked with a move to the North East.
We’ve got plenty of updates on that front, plus some details on a change in the way Newcastle might operate in the transfer market in the future. Here’s all you need to know.

Scott McTominay open to Newcastle move
After missing out on Scott McTominay in 2023, there is now a good chance that Eddie Howe will finally get his man.
A new report claims McTominay is ‘open’ to joining Newcastle and could be available for around £50m.
The Scottish midfielder is on fire at the moment for club and country, but it’s thought he’s ready to come back to the Premier League after a successful spell with Napoli.
Latest on Elliot Anderson return
We know the signing of Elliot Anderson will not be easy for Newcastle, but it’s just become even more difficult. Apparently, Forest do not want to sell Anderson in January.
Meanwhile, a report claimed Newcastle need to challenge for the title if they want to tempt Anderson back to St. James’ Park.
The frustrating thing for Newcastle is that the new PSR system means they probably never needed to sell Anderson in the first place. Too little, too late now though.
Newcastle want to shop in South America
We could witness a real change in Newcastle’s transfer strategy from here on out, with an increased focus on youth. In particular, the Magpies are keen to snap up the best young talent from abroad, just like Chelsea have been doing.
Newcastle United’s spending power ahead of the January transfer window.
The signing of Estevao is seen as the blueprint upon which Newcastle are now looking to operate, and it’s thought Steve Nickson’s connections in South America can really open up that market for the Magpies.
Newcastle are wary of new Squad Cost Ratio rules coming in next season, but signing young players to sell on could be a win-win in terms of keeping the club in line with regulations while also finding great new players for the squad.
Newcastle transfer round-up: Kees Smit, Antoine Semenyo, Odysseas Vlachodimos
Turns out Arne Slot has a connection with Kees Smit, having worked with the youngster during his time at AZ Alkmaar. That could be an issue for Newcastle, as Liverpool look to cause more misery for the Magpies in the transfer market.
However, Newcastle are hoping Smit will be tempted by development opportunities in the North East, where he’s expected to get more game time than if he went to Liverpool.
Despite links to him for a while, it is now said Newcastle are not in the race to sign Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth.
And finally, we are hearing that Panathinaikos could sign Odysseas Vlachodimos. Ironically, that would see him link up with former Magpies boss Rafa Benitez in Greece.
