Newcastle United are Carabao Cup semi-finalists thanks to Lewis Miley’s stoppage time goal.
The 19-year-old scored in the 92nd minute to give Newcastle United victory over Fulham, as they advanced to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.
Newcastle United will face Manchester City in the next round, attempting to win back-to-back Carabao Cups after beating Liverpool in the 2025 final.
Winning again would be TWICE as nice!
That first Carabao Cup win was special, but retaining the trophy would be even better. Which would mean more to you? 🤩
Winning two in a row would be seismic for the Magpies, who had endured a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy until that day at Wembley.
But before Eddie Howe can think about returning to Wembley, he has the chance to make another bit of history.
Newcastle United equal Liverpool’s impressive League Cup record
Not only did Newcastle United’s win over Fulham send them through to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, but it also meant they have won nine consecutive games in the competition.
That is the joint most in the history of the League Cup, equalling the record Liverpool set in the 1980s. They won four League Cups in a row between 1981 and 1984, with their longest run of wins inside 90 minutes during that period being nine.
Eddie Howe has now got nine League Cup wins in a row inside 90 minutes, with the run starting with the Magpies’ third round win over Wimbledon last season. Fabian Schar scored the only goal of the game that night, as they continued their journey towards silverware.
Next up for Newcastle United is the first leg against Manchester City. A win there would put them within touching distance of another final, while it would also be a record-breaking 10th consecutive Carabao Cup victory.
How long can this run continue?
Newcastle United have now won nine Carabao Cup ties in a row. They'll break the record if they win one more… 👀
Newcastle United would prefer to be away against Manchester City in the first leg
The first leg between Newcastle and Man City will be at St James’ Park. That gives them a better chance of picking up that history-making 10th win in a row.
However, their main priority will be putting themselves in a strong position going into the second leg at the Etihad Stadium.
In truth, Newcastle United fans would much prefer to play Man City at St James’ Park in the second leg. That is often the decisive fixture in a two-legged affair, and home advantage would give the Magpies a better chance of reaching the final.
Alas, it is St James’ Park for the first leg and the Etihad Stadium for the second.
