'Too soon': Eddie Howe's options are limited vs Everton amid Newcastle United injury update

Newcastle United will have a tough time of it against Everton this evening, and they’ll not be helped by the fact three defenders could miss the game.

This will be Newcastle’s first trip to Hill Dickinson Stadium, a ground Everton have settled into quickly with just one defeat there all season.

Do you agree with the Geordie Boot Boys writer predictions for Everton vs Newcastle? Let us know your thoughts!

James Rutherford: “I am backing the Magpies to win against Everton. I was optimistic going into the Manchester City game last week, and I am going to stick with that despite the Champions League defeat to Marseille.” 👀

Jakob Barnes: “Newcastle fans would probably take a boring but efficient win here and the Magpies should have enough to shut out the flailing Everton forwards.” 🫰

Jonathan Gorrie: “It’s hard to have any confidence in this team away from home. At some point, they have to click, but Everton away has all the makings of another dismal defeat. Anyway, who’s looking forward to the game?! 🤣”

It’s a game that’ll see Eddie Howe looking to fix Newcastle’s away form, which has been terrible this term. The Magpies are yet to win on the road in the Premier League in 2025/26.

Clearly, then, the Newcastle United manager will need all the help he can get. But, ahead of the game, he’s got some bad news on the injury front.

Injury latest on Sven Botman, Emil Krafth, and Kieran Trippier

In an update on the club website ahead of the match, Eddie Howe offered information on the fitness of Sven Botman, Kieran Trippier, and Emil Krafth.

He said: “Nothing major from the game [against Marseille]. We will look at the lads today. Sven Botman has been nursing a back problem the last few days.

“Kieran Trippier had a scan on his hamstring. We think it is roughly around a month, give or take. Emil Krafth came back from international duty with a knee issue, but he will be good. Whether he’s fit for this game, it’s probably too soon.”

So, it sounds like Krafth and Trippier will likely miss the trip to Everton, while Botman could well be out as well. That’s not good news for the Newcastle backline, and means the return of Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento is key.

Newcastle United target full-backs

It’s not surprising, then, that signing a new full-back is a priority for Newcastle in the January transfer window.

One name linked with Newcastle is Oscar Mingueza. The La Liga star has impressed at Celta Vigo and can play at centre-back or at right-back, which would give Howe the flexibility in his squad that he needs.

On the other side, I’d personally be looking at Antonee Robinson. With Fulham struggling this season, the time has surely come for him to move on, and he would be the ideal man to battle Lewis Hall for that left-back role.

However, if Newcastle are limiting their spending in light of PSR changes, they may want to shop in the Championship. Leif Davis at Ipswich Town has proven he can perform at the top level, while Milan van Ewijk is a great right-back who could be ready to step up.
