Newcastle United recorded a 2-1 win over ten-man Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.

While Newcastle started poorly, first half goals from Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon claimed a routine three points for Eddie Howe‘s side at St James’ Park.

Guimaraes scored directly from a corner, an effort that was so good that former Toon goalkeeper Martin Dubravka’s role can hardly be questioned.

Gordon enjoyed another bright performance and it was his ball that forced Lucas Pires into bringing down Anthony Elanga, which led to him being sent off.

Yoane Wissa made his debut and the Clarets got some hope when Jacob Ramsey gave away a late penalty but Howe’s side eventually stuck it out.

Here’s how Geordie Boot Boys rated the players…

Aaron Ramsdale – 7

A bit like the recent win over Everton, really. Did well when called upon but wasn’t much to do up until the late penalty.

Tino Livramento – 8

Absolutely brilliant. Literally any time he goes down injured must scare the life out of Toon fans.

Surely the best full-back in the Premier League as things stand.

Fabian Schar – 7

Went close with a free-kick but didn’t have much else to do.

Malick Thiaw – 7

Classy as ever. Again, wasn’t the busiest afternoon for him.

Nervy at the start and the end. Everything else was….decent?

Good? Bad? Somewhere in between? Can’t shake the feeling that this team are capable of messing things up…

Dan Burn – 7

Was crucial in helping Newcastle weather an early storm. Not always comfortable at left-back but did allow Lewis Hall something of a rest after feeling unwell. Didn’t put a foot wrong.

Bruno Guimaraes – 9

Not often you can’t blame a goalkeeper when a player scores from a corner but the midfielder’s effort would have troubled any custodian in the land.

Went close with another brilliant effort in the second-half, too.

Simply excellent.

Joe Willock – 7

Created a nice chance for Gordon in the opening few minutes and is certainly starting to get there. He may not be quite the player he was just yet, but Willock is showing signs that he’s building up his fitness and form.

Jacob Ramsey – 4

Should have done better with an early chance teed up by Gordon. Hasn’t really shown enough to justify his transfer fee just yet.

Gave away a penalty late on.

Anthony Elanga – 6

Busy, but sometimes looks too rushed. Like Ramsey, he’s struggling to look worth the money the club paid for him.

Nick Woltemade – 6

Wasn’t involved too heavily, after seeing an early shot blocked. Quietest game in a while.

Anthony Gordon – 9

Hit the woodwork, forced a red card, made chances and scored a penalty in the first half. Impressive stuff and smacked the bar in the second half too.

Subs:

Lewis Hall -7

Lewis Miley – 7

Yoane Wissa – 7

Joelinton – 7
