Eddie Howe may be set to cave in to increasing fan pressure when it comes to Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale.

Pope’s performances for Newcastle have been criticised, particularly after his high-profile mistake in Tuesday’s Champions League defeat at Marseille.

While Pope has broadly been a fine goalkeeper for Newcastle United over the years, his mistakes are becoming more frequent.

Should Newcastle fans be adopting this energy for Nick Pope?

As such, Newcastle fans want to see Ramsdale replace Pope in goal, with the Southampton loanee impressing when called upon this season.

Thus far, Howe has insisted he continues to back Pope despite his errors.

However, fresh claims have now emerged and perhaps Ramsdale could step into the fold.

Nick Pope could be dropped by Newcastle United

Earlier this week, The Athletic suggested that Pope is likely to start for Newcastle against Everton.

However, it seems the situation has developed somewhat.

That’s because, according to The Daily Telegraph, serious consideration is being given to the idea of dropping Pope for Ramsdale for Saturday’s trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Of course, there’s still a chance that Pope starts on Merseyside but the fact dropping him is being considered speaks to his current malaise.

James Rutherford: “I am backing the Magpies to win against Everton. I was optimistic going into the Manchester City game last week, and I am going to stick with that despite the Champions League defeat to Marseille.” 👀

Jakob Barnes: “Newcastle fans would probably take a boring but efficient win here and the Magpies should have enough to shut out the flailing Everton forwards.” 🫰

Jonathan Gorrie: “It’s hard to have any confidence in this team away from home. At some point, they have to click, but Everton away has all the makings of another dismal defeat. Anyway, who’s looking forward to the game?! 🤣”

Eddie Howe confirms talks with Nick Pope at Newcastle United

The Newcastle United manager has also confirmed that he’s held talks with Pope following his mistake in Marseille.

That’s not unnatural, as Howe explained at his pre-match press conference.

“Of course I discuss things with all my players on a regular basis. But yeah, I think Nick is a top-class professional and he’s an outstanding goalkeeper,” he said.

“We certainly back him, he’s made a number of brilliant saves for us this season already.”

Pope puts Newcastle in an impossible position at times. He’ll often make brilliant saves but he’s just as likely to make a mistake.

It’s harsh but perhaps the best thing for him is to take him out of the firing line. His performances will be under such scrutiny that even a small error will make headlines.

It’s time for Ramsdale to come in. To suggest he’s absolutely perfect would be unwise but it’s surely worth taking a gamble at this point.
