Newcastle United could have the chance to finally sign Davide Frattesi in January.
Back in September, Geordie Boot Boys brought you the news that Newcastle United had enquired about a move for Frattesi.
The Italian international plays alongside Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali for the Azzurri and would have been a statement signing.
Generally regarded as one of the better midfielders in Serie A and someone who has reached a Champions League final with Inter Milan, it’s easy to see why Newcastle were interested.
Knowing what you know now, would you have sold Alexander Isak in 2024 instead of Elliot Anderson? 🤔
In this scenario, we still win the Carabao Cup by the way 😂
Like Tonali, Frattesi is an all-action midfielder, capable of playing centrally as well as in a more attacking role. Last season, the 26-year-old scored seven goals while registering two assists in 47 appearances.
While previously a key player with the Milan giants, Frattesi has struggled at Inter this season, amid a lack of game time.
Now, fresh reports suggest Newcastle may still be an option for him.
Davide Frattesi wants to stay in Serie A this season
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the midfielder is destined to leave Inter after “failing to respond” under new Inter manager Cristian Chivu.
Everyone appears to be agreed on that fact, although finding a suitor may be difficult.
While the report claims that Inter only want around £26million for the player, that kind of cash is not easily accessible in Serie A.
The outlet suggests that Newcastle remain an option but that Frattesi would rather stay in Italy until the end of the season.
According to their information, he’s looking to ensure he’s in the best place possible in case Italy qualify for next summer’s World Cup and does not want to risk moving to the Premier League halfway through a season.
Hot take: I’m starting to think Newcastle United should sell Kieran Trippier in January – prove me wrong
Would be painful but need to cash in while we can! 👀
Why Newcastle United want to sign a midfielder in January
Newcastle could make a midfield signing in January, partly because Sean Longstaff was never actually replaced.
Jacob Ramsey did join the club but isn’t a direct replacement for Longstaff, with the former Aston Villa midfielder more of an attacking player.
Furthermore, Joe Willock could leave Newcastle in January, which would leave Eddie Howe light in midfield.
The signing of a new midfielder could be a welcome development on Tyneside, although whether the club move for an established player in January or a younger one does remain to be seen.
