Shearer is still the league’s all-time top goalscorer, though that record may eventually be passed onto Erling Haaland if he keeps up his own incredible goalscoring run.
Bias aside, there’s a legitimate argument to be made that Shearer is the best player to ever grace the Premier League; and that’s a view shared by former referee, Mark Clattenburg.

Mark Clattenburg bestows huge honour on Alan Shearer
On the latest episode of Beyond the Back Four, Mark Clattenburg, Kieran Maguire, and James Brooke were discussing the greatest Premier League players of all time.
While Maguire picked Thierry Henry and Brooke opted for Wayne Rooney, Clattenburg chose Newcastle United legend Shearer as the GOAT.
Clattenburg said: “Slightly biased but it’s Alan Shearer. He is still the greatest Premier League scorer at the moment. His record, plus the title he won at Blackburn, too and he even came close at Newcastle all those years ago.
“The number of goals he scored over a long period was incredible. Keeping that fit and scoring amazing goals was impressive. There are certainly a lot of players to choose from like Rooney, Henry and Frank Lampard, but I’ll choose Shearer.”
How does Alan Shearer compare to Premier League greats?
In terms of pure goalscoring alone, there is no one who can contest Shearer’s status as the best the English top flight has ever seen.
Let’s not forget, he was also a brilliant leader for Newcastle, too, captaining the team for many years. But, the major problem in the argument for Shearer is that he was never able to guide the team to glory.
