I think we can trust Thierry Henry of all people...

Newcastle United fans have already been told exactly what to expect from Hugo Ekitike by Thierry Henry.

Eddie Howe is looking to make another major signing after the arrival of Anthony Elanga, with Newcastle United in talks to sign Hugo Ekitike.

It has been reported that Ekitike has agreed personal terms with Newcastle, as the Magpies attempt to break their transfer record. The 23-year-old forward could become Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever, as talks over a £70million deal continue.

Thierry Henry says Newcastle United target Hugo Ekitike has a ‘very high’ ceiling

But what would Newcastle United be getting for £70million? Thierry Henry has already provided the answer, via Micah Richards.

During an episode of the Rest Is Football podcast in June, Richards spoke about what the Arsenal legend had told him about Ekitike and his potential.

“In terms of Ekitike, I’ve spoken to Thierry [Henry] about him a lot,” he said.

“He says he’s not [necessarily] a frustrating player, but one minute he looks amazing and the next minute he does not do the basics very well.

“He said if he gets it right and improves then his ceiling could be very, very high.”

Newcastle United is the perfect place for Hugo Ekitike to achieve his potential

Ekitike is not the finished article. In the eyes of Henry, there are even moments when he cannot do the basics of football right!

His game needs some refining, but the potential is there for Ekitike to develop into a world class talent. It is the same potential that Newcastle United identified in 2022 when they first tried to sign him from Stade Reims.

If Ekitike wants to reach that next level and hit the high ceiling Henry thinks he has got, there is no better place for him to go than Newcastle United. Simply put, Eddie Howe makes players better. The list of players who have drastically improved under his coaching is staggering, from Joelinton to Murphy.

Ekitike can join that list, while he will also have the luxury of learning from Isak. If he is serious about becoming one of the world’s best strikers then he could do a lot worse than paying close attention to what Isak does.

If Newcastle United strike a deal and get this transfer completed, Ekitike will have a golden opportunity to prove Thierry Henry right.
