Newcastle United fans could see the club finally sign a defender this summer.
While the current options at Newcastle United are doing little wrong in a defensive sense, it’s clear it’s a department that could do with strengthening. Indeed, Newcastle tried and failed to sign Marc Guehi in August 2024, so it stands to reason they want to build there.
Newcastle remain interested in Guehi but are not alone in that. Guehi could leave Crystal Palace on a free transfer in the summer of 2026, so is likely to have a few suitors chasing his signature.
With that in mind, alternatives may need to be sought. Newcastle are interested in Sporting CP’s Ousmane Diomande, though reports now claim they’ve been offered a move for a big-name defender on a free transfer.

Newcastle United offered Jonathan Tah
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle have been offered a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah.
They claim agents have put the 29-year-old’s name to recruitment staff at St James’ Park. Tah has confirmed he’ll be leaving Leverkusen this summer upon the expiration of his contract.
As such, Bayern Munich are also said to be strongly interested.
What Arne Slot said about Newcastle United target Jonathan Tah
Newcastle have been linked with signing Tah before, so it would be perhaps fair to say there is genuine interest there.
The defender was a crucial figure in the Leverkusen side who won the Bundesliga at a canter last season, making 31 appearances during a remarkable campaign under Xabi Alonso.
As a free agent, he’s likely to be in demand. Highly rated throughout Europe, Liverpool manager Arne Slot paid the defender a huge compliment back in November 2024.
Speaking after a Champions League clash between Liverpool and Leverkusen earlier this season, Slot said Tah (via Liverpool’s official website): “is a real good defender and is one of the best defenders in Germany, maybe the best defender in Germany.”
