For so long, Newcastle United’s midfield has been described as perhaps the best in the Premier League but Lewis Miley is starting to pose them some difficult questions.

The partnership between Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton has taken this Newcastle United team to unprecedented heights in the modern era.

While they remain capable of putting in fine performances as a trio, they have not been consistent enough this season.

As such, questions have been asked. Joelinton played well for Newcastle against Everton but his form has generally been an issue this season.

It has previously been unthinkable to imagine the three not playing together in Newcastle’s biggest games but perhaps things are now changing.

Miley was brilliant for Newcastle United against Everton and that may be a sign of things to come.

Lewis Miley looks ready to break into Newcastle United’s midfield

It cannot be easy to break into this midfield, given the quality all three usual starters boast.

While there will be games for all of them given the relentless fixture schedule the team face right now, Miley’s performance on Merseyside cannot be overlooked.

The 19-year-old was brilliant and became the second-youngest midfielder to ever score and assist in the same Premier League game for the club.

Eddie Howe on Lewis Miley. Does he need to play more often now?

“When you see him play, he plays with a real maturity. He very rarely gets flustered about anything, he’s very level and very calm.

“Not your normal average teenager.”

Eddie Howe believes Miley is way above a “normal, average teenager” and the ease with which he took to the field against Everton was brilliant to see.

The beauty of the Newcastle academy graduate is that he can operate in several different positions. He can play as a No.6 or as a No.8, as he did at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Interestingly, Howe thinks Miley could even play as a right-back.

With Joelinton appearing as if he’s on the downturn, Miley might be the man to replace him. Questions need to be asked about whether the greatest midfield unit in the club’s modern history needs breaking up.

Miley has had good games before but that was his biggest statement of intent yet.

The most impressive thing about Lewis Miley’s performance against Everton

His goal, while a brilliant moment, was more of a howler from Jordan Pickford than anything. Granted, that is likely to only make it better for Toon fans.

Still, the assist he provided only 55 seconds into the game is perhaps the best moment, aside from the general ease with which he played.

Newcastle’s corners have been the source of major frustration for a while now.

Can you name the youngest?!

Kieran Trippier and Tonali can both deliver a ball very well but it feels like the team waste most of their corners.

Miley changed that with a brilliant delivery for Malick Thiaw to score after only 55 seconds.

Miley has been desperate to play at Newcastle and it’s now going to be very difficult for Howe to drop him.
