Former Newcastle United striker Jon Dahl Tomasson has rejected a return to England with Norwich City.
Eddie Howe has been questioned of late, but Newcastle United are unlikely to make a managerial change any time soon.
This is sacking season, though, and many managerial changes have been confirmed around the country.
Middlesbrough have lost Rob Edwards to Wolverhampton Wanderers, and look set to pip Swansea City to Swedish boss Kim Hellberg.
Elsewhere in the Championship, Norwich City could bring in a former Newcastle United striker as their new boss.
Ex-Newcastle United striker Jon Dahl Tomasson snubs Norwich City
The Canaries axed Liam Manning earlier this month, following a terrible start to the season.
Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph claimed on Monday that former Newcastle striker Jon Dahl Tomasson was a leading contender for the job.
Tomasson allegedly impressed the Norwich hierarchy, who have also spoken to Gary O’Neil and Will Still.
However, Sky Sports have now added that Tomasson has pulled out of the race for the job after failing to reach a deal with the Canaries.
Tomasson joined Newcastle from Heerenveen back in 1997, with Kenny Dalglish believing that he could form a strong partnership with Alan Shearer.
Tomasson scored just four goals in 35 games for Newcastle and was sold to Feyenoord after just a year on Tyneside.
The Dane went on to become a star with Feyenoord and AC Milan, and previously took charge of Malmö and Blackburn Rovers.
Tomasson was sacked as Sweden boss in October, having suffered seven defeats in 18 games.
Sweden fans turned against Tomasson, with Graham Potter named as his replacement.
Tomasson would surely love a return to England at some point, but it seems a move to Norwich won’t be happening at this time.
Jon Dahl Tomasson on Newcastle United
Tomasson has previously spoken about his time at Newcastle, and he has absolutely no regrets.
The former striker noted that he preferred to play off the striker at that stage in his career, and found playing as a centre forward difficult.
Tomasson still thinks of Newcastle as a ‘special’ time in his career, having played in the Premier League and Champions League for the Magpies.
“I was very happy and I am still very happy with the move,” Tomasson told ChronicleLive in 2020.
“It was a good experience but I was a bit unlucky playing out of position after Shearer got injured in the last pre-season game.
“I had to play some of the games as a striker and, at that moment, I couldn’t do that. I was not able to play as a striker at that time. In the years after, I learnt to play as a striker as well as playing behind a striker but, at the time, I was not ready to play there alone.
“Personally, I wanted to get playing time every week and I was a young guy and I wanted to play in that position where I was at my best at that time. In my career, I’ve played in more positions but, at that time, I played off the striker.
“I enjoyed my time. Sometimes, we have a difficult season but I learnt a lot and, for me, it was a very important time in my career for getting used to a lot of things and coping with things and playing in a great league like the Premier League.
“I think every season is important but that season was something special. I played my first games in the Champions League and played in the Premier League. Sometimes, things work well; sometimes, things are not good. I think it’s normal in the development of a youngster.
“For me, it was a good experience and I look back on it being a special time where I learnt a lot,” he added.
Tomasson enjoyed success after leaving Newcastle and has also carved out a decent managerial career for himself.
The Dane’s 1997 arrival may be a case of ‘right place, wrong time’, but Tomasson clearly still holds Newcastle close to his heart.
