Former Newcastle United midfielder Elliot Anderson continues to shine for Nottingham Forest after leaving St James’ Park.

Newcastle United’s academy hasn’t exactly churned out first-team players in recent times.

That’s what makes Elliot Anderson’s rise with Nottingham Forest all the more painful.

Newcastle sold Anderson to Forest in 2024, cashing in on the midfielder before the PSR deadline.

Anderson is now being valued at £100million, with the England international going from strength to strength.

Paul Scholes on Elliot Anderson’s development since leaving Newcastle United

Anderson has emerged as one of the Premier League’s top midfielders and is almost nailed on to start for England at the World Cup.

As Newcastle look to sign Joelinton’s heir, Anderson’s progress at Forest really stings.

Paul Scholes has now offered his view on Anderson’s development and how the former Newcastle ace has surprised him.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football, Scholes admitted that he saw Anderson as more of an attacking midfielder at Newcastle.

Scholes is surprised to see Anderson develop into such a brilliant number six, praising his athleticism while suggesting him as a ‘really good signing’ for Manchester United.

“When he was at Newcastle, I thought he was a good player. I thought he’s more of an attacking midfielder,” said Scholes.

“I didn’t see him in this role that he’s playing for England as a number six, they call it these days, but no, he looks a really good player. I think he’s athletic enough as well, and yeah, I think he’d be a really good signing,” he added.

Elliot Anderson can be what he wants to be

Anderson is a rarity in the modern game in that he can truly play in any midfield role.

The 23-year-old has the athleticism, bite and composure on the ball to play as a number six or as a box-to-box player.

Anderson is also certainly technically gifted enough to play further forward, as he often did when coming through at Newcastle.

Anderson’s all-round skillset makes him so appealing, and that is why Thomas Tuchel has taken a liking to him.

Newcastle would love to re-sign Anderson, but may have to accept seeing him become a superstar elsewhere in the coming years.
