A good week for Anthony Gordon got even better as Newcastle United beat Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.

Gordon has been widely criticised for his domestic form in recent months, but his penalty against Burnley took him to two goals in as many games for Newcastle United.

It wasn’t just the spot-kick that saw him make an impact on the game, either.

Indeed, the England international twice hit the woodwork and it was his pass that forced Lucas Pires to bring down Anthony Elanga which subsequently caused his red card.

Gordon was brilliant as Newcastle United beat Burnley, building off his strong cameo against Tottenham earlier this week.

Eddie Howe was impressed with the 24-year-old, so much so that he overlooked a history-making moment from Bruno Guimaraes.

Eddie Howe says Anthony Gordon was Newcastle United’s best player against Burnley

Speaking to reporters after the game in his post-match press conference, the Newcastle United manager talked up Gordon’s outing.

In fact, Howe claimed that Gordon was Newcastle’s best player against the Clarets, which is certainly a big call.

Guimaraes, after all, became the first Newcastle player in Premier League history to score directly from a corner.

“I thought he was our best player today,” he said.

“I thought he brought the threat for us, direct running, showed his pace, showed his technical quality. I’m very, very pleased with him today and he’s had an important spell.”

Did Bruno Guimaraes mean to score from a corner?! Or are you blaming Martin Dubravka 😂

How Anthony Gordon performed for Newcastle United against Burnley

Gordon completed the most dribbles in the match (3) and was unlucky to have hit the woodwork with two of his three shots.

He put away another penalty in impressive fashion to make it 4/4 this season, too.

In total, Gordon had 65 touches in the game, made nine passes into the final third and drew three fouls.

The former Everton star also won 6/8 ground duels on Saturday.

This hasn’t been an easy season for Gordon and, admittedly, Geordie Boot Boys have been critical of him.

Still, credit where credit’s due. Gordon is in good form at Newcastle and that continued on Saturday.

He might just be building up a head of steam in time for next week’s derby…
