Erling Haaland is coming for Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer’s Premier League record.

Since December 1995, Alan Shearer had boasted the record of being the quickest player to score 100 goals in the Premier League. It took him a remarkable 124 games.

The likes of Harry Kane, Sergio Aguero and Thierry Henry all tried to break the Newcastle United legend’s record, but they all came up short.

But now it belongs to Erling Haaland, who scored his 100th Premier League goal in Manchester City’s 5-4 win over Fulham on Tuesday night. He achieved the milestone in 111 games, taking top spot away from Shearer.

Erling Haaland and Alan Shearer exchange words as Newcastle United icon’s record tumbles

After reaching the 100 mark on Tuesday night, Haaland posed with a commemorative shirt on his official X account.

The post received a reply from Shearer, who was keen to congratulate the Norwegian striker.

He wrote: “Well done Erling. Your numbers are incredible man. Keep up your great work.”

Haaland responded to the former Newcastle United striker, thanking him for the advice he gave him in 2022 when they first met after his arrival at Manchester City.

The 25-year-old replied: “Thanks for the advice back in 2022 – it paid off.”

What Alan Shearer has said about Erling Haaland breaking his Premier League goalscoring record

Haaland has the honour of scoring 100 Premier League goals quicker than any other player, and now he will have eyes on another record.

Not only is Shearer Newcastle United’s all-time leading goalscorer, but he is also the Premier League’s leading goalscorer.

Across his spells with Southampton, Blackburn Rovers and the Magpies, Shearer scored 260 Premier League goals. Harry Kane came the closest to breaking that record, scoring 213 goals before his move from Tottenham Hotspur to Bayern Munich.

Let’s say Newcastle have a January transfer budget of £100m. How are you spending it?

All on one player? £20m on five different positions? Going big on a goalkeeper and a young-full back gets my vote…

Unless he returns to the Premier League, Shearer does not need to worry about the England captain. The player he needs to worry about is Haaland, with Manchester City’s number nine hunting him down at an alarming rate.

Shearer is under no illusions that his record is under threat, admitting to BBC Sport in January 2025 that Haaland is certainly capable of surpassing his tally of 260 Premier League goals if he stays at Man City for the duration of his current contract.

“If he stays that long [until 2034 when his contact runs out], there is no doubt he will break the record,” he said.

“It might be someone else’s by then, Harry Kane or Mo Salah or Alexander Isak. But there’s no doubt if, and it’s a big if because it’s such a long contract, if he stays then he should have the Premier League goalscoring record.

“My record will go one day. There were great goalscorers before I was born that have got incredible records as well. The Premier League only started in 1992. My record will go one day, I’m sure of that.”
