Newcastle United’s win over Manchester City on Saturday night sparked a furious reaction from Pep Guardiola.
Guardiola was seen talking to Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton after Newcastle United beat Manchester City at St James’ Park, while he also appeared to grab a camera operator’s headset.
The conversation with Guimaraes was particularly interesting.
Pep Guardiola up to his old antics
Guardiola is a huge fan of Guimaraes and Geordie Boot Boys understands that Man City have previously been interested in signing him.
The City boss said he was “embarrassed and ashamed” about his behaviour after Newcastle’s win but did play down his chat with Guimaraes.
Pep Guardiola says he has a good relationship with Bruno Guimaraes
Guardiola was speaking at City’s pre-match press conference on Tuesday ahead of team’s Champions League clash with Bayer Leverkusen, who Newcastle will soon be playing.
He was asked why he sometimes speaks to opposition players, having previously made headlines when doing something similar with Nathan Redmond in 2017.
Guardiola insisted that he always speaks to Guimaraes, and that the two have a good relationship.
“We’ve known Bruno for many, many years,” he said.
“Every time, even at the Etihad after the game or in the tunnel or whatever, always we talk, always.
“I don’t know what happens, our paths always cross, and I have always a good relationship with him.”
The iconic speech Bruno Guimaraes gave his Newcastle United teammates before the 2025 Carabao Cup final.
The two other Newcastle United players who Pep Guardiola has recently praised
Guimaraes isn’t the only player who attracted Guardiola’s attention following Newcastle’s win.
Indeed, Guardiola praised Sven Botman after Newcastle beat Man City, with the Dutch defender coming off the bench to help Eddie Howe’s side see out the game.
Guardiola also praised Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope, who twice denied Erling Haaland from scoring on Tyneside.
It seems the Newcastle United squad have the respect of Guardiola, who saw his Premier League title challenge dented by their return to form.
Guardiola and Guimaraes have spoken before, although not about the prospect of a move to Manchester.
It’s easy to see why Guardiola would be such a big fan. Guimaraes is one of Newcastle’s greatest-ever midfielders and continues to make an impact at the very highest level.
