Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade couldn’t score against Manchester City, but was a major threat throughout.

St James’ Park continues to be a place nobody wants to visit.

Newcastle United’s home form this season has been seriously impressive, even if Arsenal and Liverpool left with victories.

The Magpies beat Manchester City 2-1 on Saturday evening, recording a sixth straight home win in the process.

Harvey Barnes was the hero of the night, scoring either side of a Ruben Dias equaliser for the visitors.

Barnes produced a pair of fine finishes to take City down, but Newcastle had plenty of other opportunities.

Striker Nick Woltemade was presented with a couple of fantastic openings, but couldn’t beat Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Woltemade tested the Italian with a fine header in the first half, but saw the City stopper claw the ball away.

Woltemade saw Donnarumma deny him again, as the German forward went through on goal but couldn’t score.

Donnarumma even denied Woltemade again in the second half, but the offside flag was raised.

Woltemade couldn’t add to his Newcastle account, but he certainly impressed Eddie Howe with his display.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Howe felt that Woltemade was a constant threat to the City back line.

Howe noted that Woltemade ‘needs to do better’ at times, but he was delighted to see him thriving in the final third.

“Nick played his part today,” said Howe.

“I was really pleased he was getting the chance today. He has done really well to score with the chances he has had with us, but we need to create more for him, and he needs to do better in some situations. They were there for him today, and the goalkeeper has made a couple of saves to deny him, but it was very evident that he was a threat in the game,” he added.

The whole Newcastle situation had potential for tension, especially since I arrived on the last day. Then there was the transfer fee, the expectations placed on me because Newcastle’s top striker, Alexander Isak, had left.

Newcastle United saw much more from Nick Woltemade

Woltemade has been questioned of late, especially after a couple of quiet performances on the road.

The summer signing from Stuttgart was substituted at half-time against West Ham United before an anonymous display at Brentford.

Woltemade hit back with goals on international duty with Germany and was much more involved for Newcastle against City.

This is what Howe wants to see: Woltemade getting chances to score, even if they don’t find the net.

The next challenge is for Woltemade and Newcastle to produce similar displays on the road, starting with the midweek trip to Marseille in the Champions League.
