Report: Why Liverpool really signed Alexander Isak from Newcastle, they'd have done it months before

Newcastle United seemingly had the chance to sell Alexander Isak months before he actually left the club.

Isak forced a move from Newcastle United to Liverpool in September, with the Reds paying around £125million for his services.

At the time, it looked like a bitter blow for Newcastle. They fought hard to keep their best player but eventually caved in during the dying embers of the summer transfer window.

Malick Thiaw has now scored DOUBLE the amount of goals as Alexander Isak this season…

Still, and while Isak still has time to come good, the move hasn’t worked out just yet.

He’s scored just one goal for Liverpool during a terrible season at Anfield, while replacement Nick Woltemade has already bagged seven goals at Newcastle.

Newcastle tried to keep Isak, who it seems could also have left in January.

Liverpool were interested in signing Alexander Isak in January

Isak claims he was unhappy for a while before he actually left Newcastle, with many believing it comes down to a contract improvement he was supposedly told he would get in 2024.

That never arrived and Isak, despite a poor start to the season, would kick on and further establish himself as one of the best forwards in world football.

In total, he scored 27 goals in 42 games and hit the winner at Wembley as Newcastle beat Liverpool to win the Carabao Cup.

However, in an alternate universe, that may never have happened.

According to The Times, Liverpool were willing to sign Isak in January had Newcastle been open to selling.

They wanted to begin the process of replacing Mohamed Salah while the forward was still at the club. Knowing it would be difficult to replace him on the right wing, they wanted to shift to a new way of playing by signing an elite forward.

Comment below! The one player who Newcastle United should sign in January is…

Newcastle United may have done well to keep Alexander Isak for as long as they did

Caving in at the final moment of the transfer window was hugely disappointing, although Isak’s actions did force Newcastle’s hand.

The idea that Liverpool had been interested since January, however, does paint the saga in a whole new light.

Perhaps Newcastle actually did well to keep Isak motivated at the club for as long as they did. Without him on form, Newcastle probably never would have won the Carabao Cup or qualified for the Champions League.

Isak is now struggling at Liverpool and Toon fans could be forgiven in revelling in that fact.
