Newcastle United fans have named their Man of the Match following Saturday’s home win over Manchester City.

Newcastle United lost at Brentford before the international break and needed a response against Manchester City.

Facing Pep Guardiola’s side is never easy, but Newcastle produced a superb 2-1 victory at St James’ Park.

Harvey Barnes found the net twice to hand Newcastle all three points and a sixth straight home win in all competitions.

Howe got it right on the night to take down City, with a number of Newcastle players turning in strong displays.

What Eddie Howe and the pundits said about Newcastle United’s statement win over Manchester City.

Eddie Howe: “The performance from the team was there, the hunger was there, the motivation was there. That’s the key thing we have to take forward. I think if those qualities are there, with our delivery and the players that we have, we can beat anybody.”

Alan Shearer: “If Newcastle had their shooting boots on, they should have scored six or seven – they missed four absolute sitters.”

Jamie Redknapp: “When you have a blue-chip win like today, it shows you can compete. It shows you’ve got the players to compete and go toe-to-toe.”

After the final whistle, Geordie Boot Boys readers used our on-site poll to vote for their Man of the Match.

Barnes may have scored Newcastle’s two goals on the night, but he did not win the Man of the Match poll.

From the current tally of more than 1,000 responses, Barnes came in second place with around 23% of the vote.

However, the leading man was Malick Thiaw, as the defender took around 38% of the vote with his performance in the heart of the back line.

Lewis Hall came in third with around 11% of the vote, with Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Tino Livramento the other players to take more than 5% of the vote.

Five other players received less than 5%, with Thiaw the clear winner.

Official Newcastle United vote sees Malick Thiaw miss out

Our poll had Thiaw emerge as the comfortable leader, but that is not how the official Newcastle poll has played out.

On Newcastle’s official website, two-goal hero Barnes has taken 54% of the vote at the time of writing.

Thiaw is second on 30%, while Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento have taken 10% and 6% of the vote, respectively.

Thiaw helped shackle Erling Haaland as he continues his superb start to life in the Premier League.

Barnes’ goals saw him win the official vote, but our readers clearly fancied Thiaw as the top performer against City.
