Newcastle United can make it four unbeaten in the league this weekend when they face Burnley, but an even bigger record is on the line.
The draw against Tottenham on Tuesday night may have been disappointing, with Newcastle essentially throwing away two points, but it did keep their good run going.
If you bumped into Eddie Howe on the street right now, what changes would you tell him to make vs Burnley?!
That result almost felt like a defeat for Newcastle, but the Magpies have to look at the positives. It was a point against a so-called Big Six team, Anthony Gordon played well finally, and it keeps momentum going by avoiding a defeat.
The same positivity will not be maintained if Eddie Howe fails to beat Burnley this weekend, though. Indeed, the Magpies are hot favourites to triumph, and they have history on their side, too.
Newcastle United haven’t lost to Burnley since 2019
Taking a look at the head-to-head record for Newcastle and Burnley, there is one team that has dominated in recent years, and that’s the Magpies.
Indeed, Newcastle have not lost in the Premier League since December 2019, almost six years exactly. That was a 1-0 Burnley win at Turf Moor, with former Newcastle man Chris Wood getting the goal.
| Date | Result | Competition |
| 14 Dec 2019 | Burnley 1-0 Newcastle United | Premier League |
| 29 Feb 2020 | Newcastle United 0-0 Burnley | Premier League |
| 03 Oct 2020 | Newcastle United 3-1 Burnley | Premier League |
| 11 Apr 2021 | Burnley 1-2 Newcastle United | Premier League |
| 25 Aug 2021 | Newcastle United 0-0 Burnley (P) | League Cup |
| 04 Dec 2021 | Newcastle United 1-0 Burnley | Premier League |
| 22 May 2022 | Burnley 1-2 Newcastle United | Premier League |
| 30 Sep 2023 | Newcastle United 2-0 Burnley | Premier League |
| 04 May 2024 | Burnley 1-4 Newcastle United | Premier League |
Since then, Newcastle have won six of their seven league clashes with the Clarets and drawn one. They did lose to Burnley in the Carabao Cup back in 2021, technically, but that was only on penalties after a goalless draw in 90 minutes.
Throughout the history of the two clubs, Newcastle won 49 games while Burnley have won 44. There have been 21 draws played out between them.

Eddie Howe enjoyed the challenge of managing Burnley
Of course, Eddie Howe knows all about Burnley. The Newcastle United manager previously spent 18 months at Turf Moor back in 2011 and 2012 before returning to Bournemouth.
In 2023, Howe discussed that period of his career, saying: “I look at that time at Burnley as brilliant learning for me, going from Bournemouth to Burnley was a total change, on and off the pitch.
“I inherited a team that had just got relegated from the Premier League so it was a huge test, one that I look back on now with real fondness really. It was a real challenge.
“I found it very difficult, but you learn so much in those moments and I did, I learnt so much and I hope I went back to Bournemouth a better manager. I look at it with great emotions now and I do genuinely wish Burnley huge success. I do owe them a lot as a football club.”
On December 4th 2021, Eddie Howe beat Burnley to get his first win as Newcastle manager! Can you remember the two players missing from the starting XI?🤔
When asked by the Northern Echo whether he would ever be at Newcastle were it not for that spell at Burnley, Howe said: “I definitely don’t think I would be, I don’t think I’d have progressed as a manager as quickly as I have.
“I think that experience in itself taught me so many valuable lessons that I have taken forward.”
