Anthony Gordon failed to impress on his return from injury as Newcastle United lost to Marseille on Tuesday night.
The 24-year-old was named in Newcastle United’s starting XI for the Champions League encounter, replacing Nick Woltemade up front after two games out with a hip injury.
It was not a happy return for Anthony Gordon, as Newcastle United lost 2-1 to Marseille to continue their away day woes. They have now lost four consecutive games away from home, with another coming on Saturday when Newcastle face Everton.
Who was the most DISAPPOINTING Newcastle player vs Marseille?
Newcastle United fans are tired of seeing Anthony Gordon play as a striker
Ahead of that game, Toon fans have sent a clear message to Eddie Howe regarding Gordon’s position.
While it was great to have him back from injury, Newcastle United supporters on social media do not want to see the England international playing as a striker anymore.
One fan wrote on X: “Gordon up top doesn’t work. In fact, it doesn’t even work with him on the left especially with Barnes in this form. Hasn’t scored or assisted in 20+ games, needs to sort himself out. Desperately need Wissa back asap to have actual striker options.”
Another Newcastle supporter added: “We miss far too many chances to be a top side! Gordon’s not a striker and I feel very sorry for Big Nick, Howe has to be honest on the Wissa front.”
This furious member of the Toon Army posted on X: “How is that everyone apart from Howe can see that Burn isn’t a left back, Gordon isn’t a striker, and Murphy can’t play RWB! Not even mentioning how poor Pope is consistently!”
Looking towards the transfer window opening, a fourth Newcastle United fan wrote: “We need to go out in January and buy a striker, it’s embarrassing that we have to play a winger at centre forward in the Champions League, Gordon ineffective in the middle yet again.”
“Gordon has never had a good game as striker for #nufc,” commented a fifth Toon fan.
Finally, this supporter added: “I never want to see the Gordon as our striker system again. The whole world can see it doesn’t work.”
Thomas Tuchel on Anthony Gordon’s strengths
Newcastle United have no other options up front
At the start of the season, Gordon said he sees himself as a striker long-term. That is hard to believe based on his performances through the middle.
Unfortunately, Gordon is going to remain Newcastle United’s back-up striker for the time being.
Nick Woltemade has no other understudies, with Yoane Wissa and Will Osula injured. They are both set to miss Saturday’s game against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with Wissa yet to make his Toon debut following his £55million arrival.
The decision to rest Woltemade against Marseille made sense given the volume of games coming up, but Gordon once again failed to prove he is a viable option as a striker.
But with Wissa and Osula’s return dates unclear, this is unlikely to be the last time we see the Scouser utilised centrally.
