Alan Shearer is feeling confident ahead of Newcastle United’s trip to Sunderland on Sunday.

The Tyne-Wear derby is back on the Premier League agenda for the first time in nine years as Newcastle United make the short trip to the Stadium of Light.

It is a huge game for Eddie Howe. His side have not fully convinced this season but an away win over the Black Cats could really turn their domestic campaign around.

On paper, Newcastle should be beating newly-promoted teams no matter the venue.

It doesn’t look like we’re wearing black and white on Sunday – how do you feel about that?⚫⚪

At least it's not the green kit, think of it like that!

Still, Sunderland have proven much better than many would have expected and they approach this particular derby full of confidence.

To say they are favourites would perhaps be too much but they do have something of a free hit.

Still, Shearer has come out swinging with his Sunderland vs Newcastle United prediction.

Alan Shearer predicts Newcastle United to beat Sunderland

The Newcastle United legend has been giving his predictions for this weekend’s Premier League fixtures to The Metro.

Shearer, who’s last ever goal in professional football came at the Stadium of Light in 2006, believes Howe’s side will have enough to win on Wearside.

Rather than sit on the fence, he’s predicting a statement away win.

Who are you starting in midfield vs Sunderland? 🤔

Bruno and Tonali have to start, obviously.

“As tough as it’s going to be, I do think Newcastle will go there and win,” he said.

“Sometimes you’re better off flipping a coin because forget about form, who’s doing well.. it doesn’t matter. It’s a derby and we all know what happens. I hope the referee is strong and allows one or two things to go because that adds to the excitement. I’ll go for an away win.

“I’m looking forward to it. I can’t wait.

Prediction? Newcastle win”

Newcastle United looking to end 14-year wait for Premier League win at Sunderland

Howe’s side won on their last trip to the Stadium of Light back in January 2024, but that was an FA Cup third-round game.

Indeed, Newcastle’s recent derby record against Sunderland is poor, although the Magpies are obviously a very different club these days.

The last time the two shared a division, Newcastle were still struggling under Mike Ashley’s ownership.

In fact, Newcastle haven’t won a Premier League game at the Stadium of Light in 14 years.

Not since Ryan Taylor’s brilliant free-kick on Wearside in August 2011 have Newcastle left the home of their greatest rivals with three Premier League points.

Hopefully, all that changes on Sunday…
