Alan Shearer has given his verdict on the result of Bayer Leverkusen vs Newcastle United.
The two sides are set to meet in the Champions League on Wednesday night, with Newcastle United heading to the BayArena for just the second ever time.
Newcastle have a 100% record against Bayer Leverkusen, beating them twice during the 2002/03 Champions League.
Now they are set to meet again, with the Magpies one point above the Bundesliga giants in the 36-team table.
The lads are off to Germany, but can they get a result against Bayer Leverkusen? Give us your predictions!
Newcastle United backed to draw with Bayer Leverkusen
Eddie Howe’s side will take a giant step towards making it through the league phase with victory in Germany, and would even strengthen their quest to finish in the top eight.
However, Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer does not think the Magpies will be bringing three points back to Tyneside.
As part of Amazon Prime’s Champions League coverage, Shearer has given his prediction for Bayer Leverkusen vs Newcastle United on Instagram. He is expecting a draw, while he believes the only English teams that will win this week are Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.
A draw would put Newcastle United on 10 points, and keep them two clear of Leverkusen.
While Howe will set his team up to be victorious, a draw would certainly be a positive result. To have 10 points going into their final home game against PSV Eindhoven would be a great position, while they will want to be under as little pressure as possible when they face PSG away on 28th January.
Newcastle United must repeat Alan Shearer heroics against Bayer Leverkusen
Shearer was the star of the show the last time Newcastle United and Bayer Leverkusen went head-to-head.
They faced off at St James’ Park on 26th February 2003, with the Magpies having beaten Leverkusen in Germany 3-1 a week earlier.
Can you remember where you were when Shearer bagged a Champions League hat-trick vs Bayer Leverkusen in 2003? 😍
Champions League nights on ITV were the best!
The number nine was not involved in that game, but he did return for the clash on Tyneside. He certainly made up for his previous absence, netting a first half hat-trick to propel Newcastle United to another 3-1 victory.
It would be perfect if Newcastle United could repeat that feat on Wednesday night, with current number nine Yoane Wissa available to make his second Toon appearance.
He will be desperate to score his first goal for the club, but it will likely have to come from the bench. He does not feature in Geordie Boot Boys’ predicted Newcastle United XI to face Bayer Leverkusen, with Nick Woltemade leading the line.
