'I don't know how': Paul Merson predicts the winner of Everton vs Newcastle United

Paul Merson is asking the same thing as every Newcastle United fan ahead of Saturday’s game against Everton.

Eddie Howe takes his side to the Hill Dickinson Stadium in search of back-to-back Premier League wins, with Newcastle United beating Manchester City last Saturday.

The only problem is they followed it up by losing to Marseille in the Champions League to make it four consecutive defeats away from home in all competitions.

Newcastle United’s record of one away win all season is appalling, and Paul Merson does not think it will get any better this weekend.

Newcastle United backed to lose against Everton

Ahead of Newcastle United’s Premier League game against Everton, Merson has given his prediction for Sportskeeda.

The former Arsenal attacker believes David Moyes’ team will be victorious, admitting he cannot back the Magpies because of their record away from St James’ Park.

“I don’t know what’s up with Newcastle,” he said.

“They play like they did against Manchester City and in the next game they lose to Marseille, despite taking the lead!

“Newcastle’s away form in the Premier League has been quite poor and they next face Everton on Merseyside. This is a tough game coming up for Newcastle, no doubt about it.”

Merson added: “Everton look like a much-improved side and don’t sit back and play defensive football anymore. Newcastle have won just one game away from home this season and I don’t know how I can back them in this game.”

Merson’s prediction: Everton 2 Newcastle United 1.

Newcastle United’s record away to Everton

Since Eddie Howe became Newcastle United manager, his results away to Everton have been mixed.

His Newcastle United side took on the Toffees four times at Goodison Park, winning once, drawing once and losing twice.

The victory was a 4-1 triumph that is best remembered for Alexander Isak’s incredible solo run that resulted in Jacob Murphy finding the net.

When Jacob Murphy scored that special goal against Everton last season. Perhaps another start for the right winger?

Newcastle’s last visit to the blue part of Merseyside resulted in a 0-0 draw, with Anthony Gordon missing a penalty kick against his former club.

This time the Magpies will take on Everton at a completely new ground, as they prepare to play at the Hill Dickinson Stadium for the first time.

Since moving into their new stadium, Everton have won four times in all competitions, drawing twice and losing once. That defeat came against Tottenham Hotspur.
