Newcastle United suffered a familiar fate away at Brighton on Saturday.
A Danny Welbeck brace condemned Newcastle United to yet another Premier League defeat away at the Amex Stadium.
Nick Woltemade‘s brilliant goal had given Eddie Howe‘s side hope after Welbeck opened the scoring but the former Sunderland forward ended up bagging the winner anyway.
Here’s how Geordie Boot Boys rated the players.
Nick Pope – 7
Would have been much worse without him. Pope recently agreed a new Newcastle contract and the club should be delighted about that.
Made some smart saves, even if Welbeck did sit him down for the first goal.
Kieran Trippier – 7
Composed as ever, even if he’s had many better games for the club.
Malick Thiaw – 6
Not quite at his best, along with the rest of the defence.
Sven Botman – 6
The first poor game since his comeback. Too weak for the first goal, though did look like a presence at attacking set-pieces.
Dan Burn – 6
Still doesn’t look convincing at left-back, despite what Howe says. Not terrible by any means but it’s a concern.
Sandro Tonali – 6
Bypassed too easily. Far from his best and when he doesn’t play well, Newcastle do not tend to.
Bruno Guimaraes – 6
Made some important interceptions to deny Yankuba Minteh in the first half. Fashioned a great chance early on but should have done better with it.
Joelinton – 4
Really sloppy on the ball and was fortunate a poor back pass went unpunished even before Welbeck’s goal. His form is starting to become a concern. Hooked at half-time.
Anthony Elanga – 4
Looks so short on confidence. Knocked the ball out of play before seemingly forgetting to take the ball with him on a counter before overhitting a cross.
Desperately out of form and taken off at half time.
Nick Woltemade – 7
Lacking any kind of service in his most difficult game yet. Well, that was until his brilliant fifth goal for the club. A genius touch from a player who is looking every inch a £69million striker.
That’s what you pay the big money for.
Anthony Gordon – 6
Energetic but nowhere near as good as he was for England. Industry isn’t an issue this season but end product really is.
Subs:
Lewis Miley – 6
Decent second half performance. Provided a bit of thrust in midfield as Newcastle pushed to get level and ended up getting the assist.
Jacob Murphy – 6
Much better than Elanga, though that isn’t saying much. Should have done better after a nice ball from Guimaraes.
Harvey Barnes – 6
Jacob Ramsey – 6
