Newcastle United player ratings vs Burnley as 8/10 star shines in dreadful Sandro Tonali performance

Newcastle United beat Burnley 3-1 to claim only their second away win of the season in the Premier League this season in another unconvincing display.

Goals from Joelinton and Yoane Wissa put Eddie Howe‘s side in cruise control after only a few minutes but the hosts grew back into the game.

By the time Josh Laurent pulled one back, Newcastle United looked all at sea and they didn’t settle until Bruno Guimaraes scored a lovely late third goal at Turf Moor.

It was another unconvincing performance from the Magpies, but they did at least end 2025 with a crucial Premier League win.

Here’s how Geordie Boot Boys rated the players…

Nick Pope – 8/10

Called back into the starting lineup, Pope didn’t have a huge amount to do at his former club, until making a series of fine saves towards the end.

Lewis Miley – 7/10

Miley continues to excel at full-back, a role he hadn’t played in senior football until reasonably recently.

Has covered for the loss of Tino Livramento with ease, which is perhaps the biggest compliment that can be paid to him.

Malick Thiaw – 6/10

This Newcastle team are so chaotic, they’re even making the excellent Thiaw look lost at times. Did, however, see a late header cleared off the line.

Fabian Schar – 6/10

Schar kept Newcastle in the lead in the first half with a brilliant block off the line. Some nice passes at times.

Lewis Hall – 8/10

Undoubtedly one of Newcastle’s best players in general, not even Hall was at his very best here amid an injury concern.

Did very well to tee up Jacob Murphy late on but the winger missed and may have been offside anyway.

Bruno Guimaraes – 7/10

Guimaraes did very well to keep the ball alive to allow Wissa to score but was sloppy on the ball when Newcastle ceded control after going 2-0 up.

Wrapped up the three points, however, with a lovely lob late on.

We need to talk about Sandro Tonali….

What is going on with him?! Can anyone remember when he last had a good game?

Sandro Tonali – 3/10

Tonali hasn’t been at his very best for a while now and is starting to become something of a concern. The Italian’s base level of performance is usually better than most but it’s been a while since we saw him run the show.

It’s painful to say given all he’s done in the past, but Tonali was dreadful.

Joelinton – 6/10

A powerful presence on what was his 200th Premier League appearance for the Magpies. Doesn’t look quite the same as he did in previous seasons, though.

Harvey Barnes – 5/10

Barnes should have scored in the first half and while he had a few nice touches, he didn’t impact the game all that much.

Never in doubt 😅 How many more goals will Yoane Wissa score this season?!

Yoane Wissa – 7/10

Did well to force his goal in the first half over the line, in what was a real poacher’s finish. Should have finished his header at the back post, however, to bag a brace in the opening period.

Anthony Gordon – 6/10

Gordon did well for Joelinton’s goal and caused problems, without ever really looking like the player we saw against Chelsea only a few days ago.

Wasted a great chance before the hour mark after fading after the break.

Subs:

Jacob Murphy – 4/10

Nick Woltemade – 4/10

Jacob Ramsey – 4/10
