What a player

Dan Burn is delighted that Nick Woltemade has been able to hit the ground running at Newcastle United.

Woltemade has quickly established himself as a hero at Newcastle United by scoring five goals in nine games since his club-record transfer from Stuttgart.

The German international has quickly helped fans forget the ugly Alexander Isak saga and, in an incredible twist of fate, is outperforming the Sweden star so far this season.

Newcastle’s coaching staff have been impressed by Woltemade and it’s exciting to imagine what he will be able to do when the team is fully up and running.

Woltemade’s fine start to life on Tyneside should not be taken for granted and Burn was keen to point that out.

Dan Burn reveals that Nick Woltemade has impressed Newcastle United players

The Newcastle defender was speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Fulham.

Naturally, he was asked about the striker’s form. Woltemade’s early success is one of the major talking points about Newcastle’s season, after all.

Burn revealed that Woltemade has made a big impression on the Newcastle United squad and expressed his delight that the forward has been able to shrug off a huge amount of pressure.

Asked whether Woltemade was a “bit of a character”, Burn said: “I feel like that with the Germans anyway, all the German lads that I’ve played with are quite funny in in their own way, got quite a dry sense of humour.

“So, yeah, he’s fit into the group really well. And I think you’ve seen it. He’s not sort of a traditional big sort of tall player like me and him are quite similar with how good we are with our feet and stuff.

“So, but no, the way he comes in and links up the sort of tidy little touches that he does, he’s yeah, he’s made a really good impression and just really happy for him because I know that there was probably a lot of pressure when he first came.”

Eddie Howe gets it right again after instant feeling over Nick Woltemade

Newcastle’s recruitment during the Eddie Howe era has largely been brilliant. Indeed, it’s difficult to think of many signings that have not worked out to some degree.

Replacing Alexander Isak wasn’t easy. Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko were all seen as potential targets but ended up heading elsewhere.

Needing to replace one of the world’s leading forwards after he decided to leave the club in the lurch, all while watching rival clubs sign their targets left Newcastle in an almost impossible position.

They needed to act and took something of a risk on the German international. Still, Howe’s instant gut feeling on Woltemade was positive and he’s since been vindicated.

“It’s never lost on me, the psychology factor, the responsibility that comes with the position,” said Howe.

“Not everybody can take that here. I felt immediately when I spoke to him, he could.

“That’s sometimes a gut feel rather than any statistical data that you can get.

Newcastle needed to pull a rabbit out of the hat in the transfer market and the early evidence suggests they were able to do exactly that.”
