Yoane Wissa’s desperation to get himself fit for Newcastle United is pleasing to hear amid the club’s current struggles.

Wissa, of course, is yet to make his debut for Newcastle United following a big-money move from Brentford in September.

The forward injured his knee while playing for DR Congo later that month and seemingly remains in a race against time to feature against Manchester City after the international break.

Newcastle have high hopes for Wissa, who – on paper at least – provides a virtual guarantee of Premier League goals given his fine record over four seasons at Brentford.

While some Newcastle players have had their mentality questioned in recent weeks, insight into Wissa’s recovery offers a telling response on that front.

Yoane Wissa doing extra training work away from Newcastle United behind the scenes

Recently, The Mirror ran an article revealing Wissa’s swimming sessions at Jesmond Pool in Newcastle.

The Chronicle, meanwhile, build on that.

They reveal that sources at Newcastle are saying Wissa is doing this in his free time. He’s already undergoing fitness work at the Newcastle United training ground, but is seemingly going the extra mile.

The report quotes a source saying: “He is doing all of this in his free time.

“There are hydro facilities at the training ground so he can get into the water there. So this is about using his own free time to get in shape.”

Yoane Wissa is putting his money where his mouth is at Newcastle United and it’s brilliant

Elite level footballers obviously need to do a lot in their free time to keep themselves in shape to match the demands of the game.

Still, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be praised when they go above and beyond.

Wissa reportedly feels like he owes Newcastle after they spent so much money to sign him from Brentford.

Financially, it was a gamble given the striker offers little in the way of resale value. In fact, PIF weren’t comfortable with Newcastle signing Wissa due to his age.

The 29-year-old can do little about that, or his injury. For those who have seen it, he simply falls over on a bobbly pitch and collapses into a heap on his knee.

He can only do all he can to get himself fit and firing as quickly as possible. By doing that, he’s really putting his money where his mouth is.

Clearly desperate to repay Newcastle, he’s filling his end of the bargain.
