There was disappointment all round for Newcastle after twice throwing away the lead against Tottenham Hotspur, but one player stood out as the scapegoat.

The likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon were the standout performers for Newcastle against Spurs, but their impact off the bench was still not enough to get all three points.

Newcastle United had the lead going into injury time after a controversial penalty for the Magpies. But, with just minutes to go, Cristian Romero sent an overhead kick into the back of the net past a flailing Aaron Ramsdale.

And, it’s the Newcastle goalkeeper on whom the fans have pinned the blame after the draw at St. James’ Park, with many calling for change in the New Year.

Newcastle United fans are unhappy with Aaron Ramsdale

Taking to Twitter/X to react to the result and the performance, there is one name that keeps cropping up in the comments from Newcastle fans and it seems they are not happy with Ramsdale’s display.

Ramsdale has stepped in for the injured Nick Pope in the last two games, but supporters are already wishing he hadn’t.

One said, “Don’t dare criticise Pope again.” Another added, “Everyone wanted Pope out. Ramsdale was punted from Arsenal and was at Southampton for a reason. Back-up and cup at best. Two shots on goal from a defender and both went in.”

A third said: “Our goalkeepers are starting to worry me a little. I thought Ramsdale should’ve saved their second.”

Pope is out for another three weeks, so Newcastle are going to have to stick with Ramsdale. That is, unless Eddie Howe listens to a few of the supporters who suggested he, “Give John Ruddy a crack in goal Saturday.”

One even looked further into the past and said: “We shouldn’t have ever replaced Martin Dubravka.”

Developments this week suggested Newcastle will look at signing James Trafford again soon. Given his debacle tonight, it seems supporters are behind the idea of replacing Ramsdale.

One wrote: “We need a new keeper next month.” Another told Howe: “Please get Trafford in January.”

Aaron Ramsdale has to dust himself off quickly

As we say, Nick Pope is not coming back any time soon. Ramsdale will almost certainly play throughout that period of absence for the Newcastle number one, and he cannot let this game against Spurs get him down.

We saw Pope make a massive error against Marseille, and these things happen to goalkeepers. It’s all about how they react that matters.

Has Newcastle 2-2 Tottenham made you feel any differently about Aaron Ramsdale?👀

At the end of the day, yes, Ramsdale has ultimately cost Newcastle the points against Tottenham, but he played really well against Everton at the weekend. It’s swings and roundabouts.

If he can produce a big performance against Burnley and then go into the Tyne-Wear derby and pull off some important saves, the Magpies’ fans will soon forget these mistakes.
