William Osula may be unlikely to get what he wants and probably deserves at Newcastle United, according to Craig Hope.
The final stages of the season have seen Osula emerge as a genuine force for Newcastle United.
Indeed, Osula is in brilliant form for Newcastle, scoring five goals in his last six games after earning a starting berth ahead of expensive strikers Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.
Still, it may not be enough to get him the new contract he might like.
Osula might be denied new contract at Newcastle United
Reflecting on Newcastle’s 3-1 win over West Ham in which Osula scored twice, Hope of The Daily Mail claimed while speaking on a video posted onto YouTube: “That is the resolve now, to keep him and work with him because if they were to sell Will Osula, they’d go out and try to replace him with Will Osula.
“Now, a little aside on that, he’s probably going to want more money, given what he’s being offered and his camp will bring to the table of what is on offer elsewhere.
“Half of Europe want him. Even Bayern Munich have checked on him this season. I’m told, for now, because Osula’s on that long term contract there are no plans to sit down and discuss.”
The 22-year-old is still under contract until 2029, so Newcastle are in a strong position.
Still, not rewarding a player when he’s on the up is something of a risk. Osula’s Newcastle future has rarely been certain and there are reportedly several clubs interested in signing him.
Clearly, the club cannot just casually hand out new contracts when a player hits form. However, if they really do believe that Osula can lead the line for them next season, there does need to be a recognition of that in terms of a new deal.
It is still too early to confidently declare that Osula is of the level required to score goals for a team with the ambitions Newcastle owners PIF at least say they have.
However, the former Sheffield United youngster couldn’t really have done much more of late and, at his age, there’s plenty of time to develop even further.
Newcastle cannot just keep Osula. They need to keep him happy – at least if he keeps scoring goals.
Their last two striker signings have not worked out. Perhaps they had the one they need last summer in the squad all along.
