Newcastle United are in pre-season training ahead of another huge campaign, and it will be fascinating to see what happens with Sven Botman.
Botman has missed a significant period of his Newcastle United career through injury, and those problems continued deep into last season before a brief return to action.
The Dutchman was brilliant during his first season at St James’ Park. Indeed, Newcastle paid £35million for Botman in 2022 and the defender looked like one of the best defenders in the Premier League during the 2022/23 season.
Newcastle need him back at his best and the hope will be that a full pre-season will allow him the chance to properly build up his fitness again.
Still, slight concern would have emerged after the 25-year-old was seen wearing a strapping over his knee during the training camp in Austria.
Any fears, however, may have been misplaced.

Sven Botman involved in full training for Newcastle United
Newcastle fans were worried about Botman and that is only natural.
He’s missed 59 games since joining the club and Eddie Howe has confirmed he’s held “difficult” conversations with Botman after so many injury issues of late.
However, according to journalist Joel Bland on social platform X, Botman has been fully involved in training out in Austria.

Promisingly, Botman is willing to sign a new contract at Newcastle. His current deal doesn’t expire until the summer of 2027 and he’ll no doubt need to prove his fitness before the club commit to any talks.
Still, there can be little doubt about the defender’s quality. PSG have reportedly been interested in the former Lille star, though the ACL injury he suffered brought an end to that.

At his best, Botman looks like one of the more elite defenders around. Clearly, the sheer number of injuries he’s suffered could have an impact, but there has to be confidence he can get back to the level he showed prior to all of the ailments.
Hopefully, a strong pre-season leads to more appearances and therefore a new contract.
