Matthias Jaissle watched on as his Newcastle United went 1-0 down to Bournemouth inside ten minutes.
It looked like Anthony Elanga was clearly fouled in the build up to Tavernier’s goal but the referee not interested.
By that point it had become clear United had been handed an appalling referee as he appeared determined to give the opposition as many decisions in their favour as possible. It actually got even worse from that point on where ref Robert Jones was concerned.
Bournemouth were playing really well and when the second goal came on 35 minutes, it was the home side who helped make it happen. A number of errors and it ended up as a Thiaw own goal but the damage had already been done and he could do nothing about that final touch.
Harvey Barnes though went straight down the other end and curled in a stunning effort from Newcastle’s left.
Bournemouth clearly couldn’t keep up their first half pace and Newcastle dominated after the break but a combination of Bournemouth time wasting and the beyond useless referee caused countless interruptions as the ref and the Cherries combined to try and stop any NUFC momentum.
Justice was done in the final minute of normal time though when a cool finish from sub Jacob Ramsey earned United a deserved point.
Even then though the referee somehow gave only six minutes of added time despite numerous stoppages as the physios came on to treat the Bournemouth players who took it in turns to collapse to the floor.
Matthias Jaissle speaking to BBC Sport after the final whistle: “I have mixed feelings. But after that start, you should be happy. But if we could have performed at the best level over 90 minutes, we could have had all three points. We couldn’t match Bournemouth’s intensity in the first half and conceded twice. That’s something you could avoid but I’m proud of the team to have shown the reaction. We were clear it would be a tough, tough game. If you look at our history against Bournemouth, it was never going to be easy. We wanted to win. We need to make sure we get the three points next time. We will be consistent with our statements. I said from the first day, there will be ups and downs. We saw within the game today a down but also an up.”
Matthias Jaissle asked what we can expect from new signing Matias Fernandez-Pardo after an impressive cameo off the bench: “A lot of quality. It’s the reason why we have signed him. He is still young but has got a lot of potential. We need to be careful to manage him well because of the load. He hasn’t played for 90 minutes for a long, long time. The whole club and fans can enjoy what we can expect from him in the future.”
Matthias Jaissle asked about the reaction of the Newcastle United fans: “A lot of satisfaction after we did our round after the match. They saw that the team was trying and believed in themselves. We made the turnaround almost complete. But at least we got one point. I saw so many happy faces in the crowd.”
Matthias Jaissle asked whether Bournemouth’s first goal should have stood: “Sorry….I cannot say anything right now. I haven’t seen it after the match again. I don’t want to make a wrong statement:”
A very diplomatic Newcastle United Head Coach after having been yellow carded during the match when reacting to the referee’s appalling display.
