It has now been revealed that Richard Masters received a £1million bonus to his Premier League pay.
This is for the 2024/25 season, with the Premier League accounts now available to view at Companies House.
Richard Masters receiving a ‘basic’ salary of £1.63million BUT handed a £1million bonus on top of that.
So for last (2024/25) last season, the Premier League CEO pocketing £2.63million in total.
This news revealed by the excellent Martyn Ziegler at The Times.
Ziegler saying that this most recent yearly bonus was around about double what Richard Masters received in 2023/24.
The Chief Sports Reporter quite rightly linking this in with the ongoing shambles within the Premier League.
Martyn Ziegler stating: “…but its [Premier League] annual accounts give no indication when the case against Manchester City for 130 alleged rule breaches will be completed.”
The man from The Times going on to say that: “The accounts show that the league’s legal bill remains high, despite falling slightly compared with the previous season. The accounts also refer to the case involving Manchester City’s alleged transgressions of financial rules — still unresolved more than three years after they were charged. Although the league’s overall operating expenses hit record levels of £556million in the 2024-25 season, sources said the legal costs had dropped slightly from £48million in 2023-24 — a figure that was six times higher than the original budget — to just over £44million in 2024-25.”
Quite how no conclusion has been announced to the 130 charges Manchester City faced is unbelievable.
Fans of other clubs not surprisingly wondering how this can be allowed to go on.
Martyn Ziegler adding: “The 2023-24 season was particularly expensive in terms of lawyers because as well as the 130 alleged breaches and a separate legal case involving City — relating to the league’s associated party transaction rules — the Premier League had Profitability and Sustainability Rules cases against Everton and Nottingham Forest and an investigation into Chelsea for historic undisclosed payments to agents and players. The cost to both sides of the Premier League’s case against City may have topped £200million, with top lawyers charging thousands of pounds an hour. An independent commission finished hearing the case on the 130 alleged breaches in December 2024 but has still not reached a verdict.”
I think that the bottom line is that an awful lot of people, including Richard Masters, are making an awful lot of money and difficult to see exactly how they deserve it.
