When joining Newcastle United last summer, Antonio Cordero was seen as one of the best emerging young talents in Spain and attracting interest from many other clubs.
The then 18-year-old winger had managed 13 direct goal involvements in the Spanish second tier for Malaga in the 2024/25 season, scoring six and getting seven assists.
After signing for Newcastle United, Antonio Cordero joined Belgian club Westerlo for the 2025/26 season but after only 87 minutes in sub appearances that was cut short in December 2025.
Having turned 19 in November 2025, he then went on loan to Spanish second tier club Cadiz on 31 December 2025. Once he had settled in he became one of their best players and scored three goals in the final five matches of the season.
Now it has emerged that Cadiz are desperate to see Antonio Cordero return on loan again for the 2026/27 season.
Over in Spain, Marca claim that the Newcastle United teenager also wants to continue to get first team football there: ‘Antonio Cordero is very keen to continue wearing the Cádiz shirt next season…the forward contributed three crucial goals in the final stretch of the season, earning the full confidence of the Basque coach (Imanol Idiakez) and demonstrating his quality in the tough fight to avoid relegation. Following the official announcement of the end of his loan spell , Antoñito Cordero and his representatives are keen to extend his stay in Cádiz. Although the player has received interest from other top Segunda División clubs such as Mallorca and Almería , his absolute priority is to remain with the Cádiz project. The convenience of playing close to home and the prominent role he has played in recent months are the main reasons why he is considering a move to the Yellow Submarine.’
Marca going on to say: ‘For the deal to go through, Cádiz and Newcastle, the club that owns his registration rights, must reach a new agreement . According to the latest reports from Radio MARCA Cádiz and Territorio Cadista , the Andalusian club’s sporting management has already begun the necessary steps to negotiate another year on loan for Antonio Cordero.’
However, the financial side of things could be an issue.
Marca saying: ‘The financial aspect will once again be key , given that the Premier League club covered a significant portion of his salary…’
Whilst I can’t imagine Antonio Cordero is on huge wages at Newcastle United, it appears clear that neither Cadiz or any other club in the Spanish second tier can afford them, so United would have to once again have to still pay a lot of his wages if he ended up playing on loan at that level next season.
It was great to see him the teenager getting regular football and finishing so strongly in the later stages of last season, hopefully he can now use that as a springboard to further progression in his fledgling career.
I assume Antonio Cordero will be given a chance to train with the first team squad when the Newcastle United players begin first team pre-season preparations on Monday 13 July 2026. A chance for Eddie Howe and his coaching staff to have a look at the winger before deciding what will happen next season.
Always a difficult balance but I am guessing that another loan deal is on the cards. Hopefully that will be a loan move to a club at the highest possible level where the young winger will get regular first team football AND Newcastle United not having to pay most of his wages.
