Bruno Guimaraes a big Arsenal injury doubt for the start of the season

Bruno Guimaraes is a big injury doubt for Arsenal as the 2026/27 Premier League season is set to kick off.

The Gunners start their season tonight at home to Coventry.

However, Bruno Guimaraes may not be on the pitch as they start their title defence.

The former Newcastle United midfielder picked up an injury last weekend in the Community Shield match.

Speculation all week about how bad the injury is and when asked about it at his pre-match press conference, Mikel Arteta dodged the question about how serious or not the problem is and whether or not Bruno Guimaraes is ruled out for the start of Arsenal’s season. I have seen claims online that the injury could be a lot worse than just a knock but then you get this kind of speculation about countless players, including when Newcastle United players have picked up a knock/injury.

Not sure if I will watch this Arsenal v Coventry match but I know for sure that if I do, I would rather not see our former captain on the pitch.

When I have seen the likes of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali in their new kit, I can’t say that it has bothered me at all. Gordon is now playing in another country and Tonali has gone to a club that finished one place above the relegation zone in each of their last two seasons.

I am not convinced Tottenham are suddenly going to be a far better team even though they are spending huge amounts of cash, they seem to be overpaying for all their signings and the £100m for Sandro Tonali (who has admitted he didn’t even want to sign for Spurs and was only forced to do so because no Italian team could afford to more than double his wages like Tottenham have done and put the cash up for the transfer fee). I don’t think Spurs will come so close to relegation this season but I wouldn’t bet on them bothering the very top end as all the ‘top six’ media are desperate to claim.

On the other hand, Bruno Guimaraes has joined the reigning champions and with Arsenal appearing to have strengthened AND their closest challengers Manchester City looking to have weakened in terms of both manager and players, I have a feeling I might be avoiding watching Arsenal too much this season, especially if the taxi driver’s son is in the team.

Apart from the injury that saw Bruno Guimaraes miss a couple of months from February to April earlier this year, the Brazilian barely missed any other match through injury in his four and a half years at Newcastle United.

Ironic if Bruno G is now going to miss Arsenal’s start to the season.

However, Yoane Wissa had hardly missed a match through injury in the three years before joining Newcastle United last summer and his 2025/26 NUFC season was wrecked before he had played a minute for his new club.

I don’t wish anything seriously bad to happen to Bruno Guimaraes but I would be lying if I said I would lose any sleep if our former talisman ends up having an injury-plagued season and that contributes to Arsenal not having the kind of successful season pretty much everybody is assuming will be the case.

It is a funny old game as somebody once said and football has a habit of continuing to surprise you.
