Steve Bruce has been talking about Eddie Howe resigning from the Newcastle United job.
The United manager confirming his departure on Friday.
Eddie Howe had been Newcastle United boss for over four years and eight months, since 8 November 2021.
Howe the replacement for Steve Bruce who was sacked in October 2021, lasting only one match after the new Newcastle United owners bought the club from Mike Ashley.
I am surprised by some of the comments.
Steve Bruce famously declared disparagingly: “The fella who got Bournemouth relegated”, when talking about Eddie Howe in the past.
Steve Bruce more keen now to declare “magnificent” when referring to Eddie Howe on Talksport: “We are all shocked at the timing of it, it is the timing of it more than anything. I have to say, Eddie Howe has done a magnificent job and a lot of Newcastle fans, and I can still say I’m one of them, will be totally disappointed, a little bit disillusioned really with what’s happening. Really it started a year ago didn’t it. The (Alexander) Isak situation wasn’t great for the football club at all, was it.”
Bruce adding: “You know, Newcastle made this pledge that by 2030 they are going to try and win the Premier League. Unfortunately, it looks like they are going to have to go down a different route. It doesn’t look as if it is the same club as it was maybe two or three years ago. And the one thing that you can’t be doing is keep selling your best players. We all know that unfortunately it happens, you know to lose…it looks like [Bruno] Guimaraes might be going to Arsenal as well, doesn’t it. So it is a difficult time for the manager when he keeps losing his best players and you are going to replace them with younger ones. We can all understand the situation but it is very very difficult when the landscape has changed so much.”
Steve Bruce going on to say: “Look, they might have this problem with financial fair play, it seems a difficult one for clubs like Newcastle and Aston Villa, who want to progress and want to compete with the big boys. It seems as if they can’t because of the financial restrictions on them and that’s not healthy. I think Eddie Howe has done a magnificent job, he will probably take a break I would have thought…and any of the big jobs that are coming along, I think he will be in the frame for them. He has been a magnificent manager at Bournemouth, it didn’t quite happen for him at Burnley, but he has done fantastically well [at Newcastle United] and five years in the hotseat at Newcastle is a tough gig, believe me.”
