It has now been revealed that three weeks after having been released by Newcastle United, Matt Targett has now signed for another Premier League club.
The former Aston Villa defender saw his United contract end on 30 June 2026 and he became a free agent.
Now Hull City have signed Matt Targett after his departure from Newcastle United.
The Premier League newcomers looking to build a squad to deal with the step up to the top tier.
Ironically, Matt Targett was on the losing Middlesbrough side that were defeated in the play-off final by Hull City.
So if Middlesbrough had won at Wembley very likely that he would have been offered a permanent deal at Boro after a successful loan spell.
Hull City state that Matt Targett has signed an initial two-year contract, with a club option of a further year.
The former Newcastle United defender will turn 31-years-old in September.
Matt Targett has been speaking about the decision to join his new club: “I’m delighted to be here. It was during the England game on Saturday night that my agent rang me and said Hull City were interested. The next minute, I was on a phone call with the owner. He is very invested in the football club and speaks very passionately, so it didn’t take much convincing to join. Speaking to boys who have been here previously, they spoke very highly of the club, so it was a no-brainer. It’s going to be a massive challenge, but we can take huge confidence from what the likes of Sunderland and Leeds did last season.”
The former United defender adding: “I’m at an age now where I feel like I am an experienced head to pass on previous experience of the Premier League to players who have not been in this situation. I’m hoping I’ll be a huge help in the dressing room. It’s a great group, very welcoming and easy to fit in. I played with Jack Butland at England youth level – he’s the only one I knew coming into the team. I’m looking forward to meeting the fans and hopefully we can get the place rocking for the new season.”
Matt Targett won’t have to wait too long for his chance to return to St James’ Park, Hull City visit Tyneside on Saturday 19 September in the Premier League, a 3pm kick-off.
