Crystal Palace 2 Newcastle 1 – Sunday 12 April 2026 2pm

Instant fan/writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.

Nat Seaton:

‘A terrible result after looking like we could take all 3 points, we end up losing.

Two bottom half Premier League teams in the sun and wind in South London couldn’t produce anything of real quality.

A game where their substitutes win the game and our substitutions (lack of?) left a lot to be desired with the bench that we had.

The penalty sums up where we are at, if Botman doesn’t pull the shirt he doesn’t give the ref opportunity to give a penalty but it still was a decision that I can’t believe and lost us the game.

Losing when ahead yet again, this hits hard.’

Jamie Smith:

‘Another gutless disjointed performance inviting yet another defeat from a winning position.

The excuse of 2 games in a week is no more and European qualification has gone up in smoke.

The season just needs to end right now, the players and manager putting fans through torment every week now.’

Simon Ritter:

‘Another three points lost from a winning position by conceding two late goals.

We were probably the better team in a cagey first half despite mustering only one effort on target, our goal.

Second half, the Palace keeper blocked an early Osula attempt that would have given us a cushion.

The hosts were on top for the final 40 minutes and brought on their best players at the right time. They hit the bar and still Eddie Howe changed almost nothing.

The warning signs were as clear as day: Osula was running on empty, so was Miley, Murphy was poor throughout.

One substitution was never likely to be enough. Ramsey should have been on much earlier but when do we ever bring on a sub when we are winning? It’s a massive blind spot.

Regardless of the penalty, we deserved what we got . . . nil points.’

Billy Miller:

‘Absolutely livid with that.

Scraped to a 1-0 lead against a much changed Palace team and then fell apart when they brought a few of their better players on.

We were 3 points off 6th at half time.

We’re 14th at full time.’

Mark Jankowski:

‘Another pathetic capitulation from Newcastle United from a winning position.

I love Eddie Howe and what is achieved at the club has been magnificent but the blame here lies squarely at his feet.

It was our strongest bench in months yet Howe waits until momentum has completely shifted before making any meaningful substitutions.

Newcastle gave a solid away performance for about an hour and were deservedly in front following a lovely passage of play and improvised finish.

With Palace bringing their better players off the bench as they grew more desperate to get back in the game, we were always likely to need to use our bench, but for some reason Howe saw fit not to do this.

As a result, we threw away yet another lead and a valuable three points as Howe edges ever closer to a summer departure.’

Tony Mallabar:

‘Absolutely dreadful.

In the first half I counted Gordon bottle out of three 50/50s.

I am normally Osula’s biggest critic but at least the lad put a shift in.Starting him with 130 million on the bench is criminal.

After losing to the village of the dammed twice in one season, Eddie Howe is now losing the plot and needs to go ASAP.

I am now at Norwood junction waiting for the train back to King’s Cross and the mood amongst our away following has flipped.’

David Punton:

‘When it rains, it pours.

That’s now 25 points thrown away from winning positions this season.

A result that does nothing to silence the manager’s critics and leaves us mired in mid-table.

To come back after the three week break and lose in the same manner as the derby is unforgivable and against a Palace team who have only won only three games three home this season.

What the hell is going on?’

Matt Busby said…:

‘Poor performance, scrappy goal and with ten minutes on the clock, we were in danger of winning this, but the bloke leaving the pitch wearing the shirt with Wissa written on it turned the game on its head and we leave London with nowt.’

GToon:

‘In 50+ years of supporting this lot I have seen some rubbish over the years. This lot are right up there, manager included.

There’s been an unprecedented level of investment in that squad and yeah, we have won a cup, but so did Portsmouth, Middlesbrough and Swansea and they don’t use that to argue about how good they really are.

There isn’t a player I’d keep.

If that was the reaction after the catastrophe against that lot down the road then there needs to be a few words had from top to bottom.

I’d take Bournemouth’s manager and team over this lot any day of the week. Gutless.’
