We asked Dean Wilkins to give us his match ratings and player comments after Chelsea 0 Newcastle 1.
Ramsdale 8
Undoubtedly feeling the benefit of now getting a run in the team.
The players in front of him did so well, meaning Chelsea only had three efforts on target of any description.
However, the keeper did everything asked of him and became the first one to keep a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge since the first day of the season.
Livramento 9
After a couple of cameos off the bench, Tino able to start and give Kieran Trippier a shift off at last.
What a positive dilemma for Eddie Howe, which of the pair to start against Barcelona on Wednesday.
A clear win for Tino against Garnacho and of course, brilliant play from Livramento when he moved into a central position to play Willock through and set Gordon up for the winner.
Thiaw 9
With so many injuries, so much asked of Malick Thiaw in his first season.
He has absolutely smashed it. The odd mistake, but when playing pretty much every match, that will happen.
Today he was at his very best and no chance of the kind of slip that allowed Pedro to score at St James’ Park, when Chelsea stole a point.
Pedro, Delap and the rest were played so well by the German international.
Also denied a blatant penalty when dragged to the ground by Reece James at a corner.
Botman 9
Eddie Howe alternating between Burn and Botman, such a massive help to have this competition and strength in numbers back.
The same as at right-back, a positive dilemma for Howe as to who plays against Barca.
I thought Botman and Thiaw were class on Saturday and like Ramsdale, very much deserving of a clean sheet.
Hall 9
What can you say?
A brilliant football player AND a lifelong Newcastle United fan.
Chelsea didn’t have anybody close to the quality of Lamine Yamal and Hall dominant against anybody Chelsea put down his side.
The full-back also of course showing his quality as usual going forward.
Willock 8
I think tough away matches like this suit him.
Always willing to carry the ball and get forward to support the centre-forward.
A great run and laid it on a plate for Gordon to score.
Ramsey 8.5
Tends to go under the radar a bit but is now consistently very good.
In the absence of all of United’s first choice midfield trio, Ramsey rose to the challenge even more.
A key man in this win.
Woltemade 7.5
Some ridiculous over the top criticism of Big Nick this season.
Double figures in terms of goals and also providing assists.
Still very inexperienced as having started so few top tier matches in Germany before his arrival, this season will see him all the stronger for the next one.
With so many midfielders unavailable, Woltemade doing so well at Stamford Bridge.
Jacob Murphy 7.5
Like everyone else, put a very good shift in.
More a case of defensive discipline than getting forward so much, today’s captain leading United to a huge win!
Barnes 7.5
Very similar to Murphy, diligent in tracking back and did provide some threat down his side.
Can be happy with his contribution.
Gordon 9
Man of the match.
Got the winner and worked so hard.
Had another couple of efforts on target and never stopped working.
Other than the goal, a huge moment when just as Reece James was going to shoot, Anthony Gordon raced back and took it off his toes.
SUBS
Joelinton 7
A massive help to have Big Joe to come on and help see out the win.
Didn’t disappoint.
Burn 7
Eddie Howe referenced how big a help it was to have Big Dan Burn and Big Joe, available off the bench.
Like the Brazilian who cost only forty million, the Big Lad from Blyth who cost only thirteen million was never going to let United throw this one away.
Elanga 7
Quietly getting there with a mixture of starts and sub appearances.
Did what he needed to do and worked hard to help ensure the win.
